Emotion Sickness

I have butchered others 
the name of God and country,
men cursing me with their
last gasp of  pain,
but I've also tenderly bandaged
the fingers of a toddler,
and set baby birds in
gloved hands back to nest.

I am guilty of using others to succeed,
by making steppingstones of their souls,
but there were times
I helped others succeed as well,
by using what was in their souls
to step forward courageously.

I have stood on stages
and entertained many, 
richly blessed,
but have also known times
lived in my car,
scrounging for my next meal,

I often abuse the language
with foul invectives,
but I counter it tenfold
with the harmony of 
poetic endeavors.

I strive to make God my religion,
not religion my God,
I know that there is 
a for in forgiving,
that's what giving is for.

I have known drugs
in years past as a vice,
but also have used them
to ease the grip of pain.

I am human with an e at times
and at other times filled 
with human angst.
I have been married to 
Miss Takes since adulthood,
as well as Miss Adventure 
and Miss understanding,
a bigamist courting disaster,
but I often divorce myself
from their seduction.
And I know when my 
\flesh becomes humus,  
my soul will be weighed,
on the scales of judgement.
and lest the devil press
his thumb upon my fate,
I must strive to find equality,
a balance in the few years,
that I have been granted
on this slippery slope of life.
