Recorded 25 December, 2021 from 4:30 AM until 6:30 AM, near Omiha Bay, Waiheke Island.

Birds include Tūī (parson's bird), Riroriro (grey warbler), Ruru (morepork), Piwakawaka (fantail), Kākāriki, song thrush, blackbird, Kererū (NZ pigeon), house sparrow, and even a cooing chicken from next door!

A very, VERY choice find!

Last week I came across a rare flexible celluloid record [Filmophone Label] during my semi-nightly shellac cataloguing project. 

This 92 year old record is *quite* susceptible to the elements. Under humid conditions it tends to absorb atmospheric water, curl and lose audio fidelity.

I digitized both sides at 45rpm;  w/ a Shure 78MS @ 0.5 g (very light tracking!). Using Audacity, I sped it up it up to 78.

This is the raw file; no 'sweetening.'

I am struck by how quickly the sounds go from just the alien-sounding chittering of a few  possums for most of the night to the laughing kookaburra's alarm clock--which wakes of the rest of the birds in short order
Animals: long-tail possum, laughing kookaburra, Australian magpie, noisy miner, grey butcherbird, currawong,  and rainbow lorikeet.

Feeling Weird

"May this love pass from my hands to yours." Prayer that the Horders always used at the dinner table.  This was at the Hayesville, NC house in September 2008, when the whole family came up to celebrate Mom and Dad's memorial.  Two days before the memorial, Charles, Louanna, Wendy, Hessie, and I arrived.  Right before tucking into pesto pasta with mushrooms and a fresh garden salad, we all held hands.

Northern pacific tree frogs (Pseudacris regilla regilla), recorded in Bayside, California (Humboldt County) in February, 2003. The pacific tree frog may tiny (males are between 3-5 cm), but the call from one individual male can exceed 87 decibels! It is the only frog which actually goes "ribbit!."
