The Eerie Tapes

Deemed ‘unofficial’ up until the mid-80’s, Soviet Post-Punk and New Wave bands had to self-distribute their records via illicit ‘magnetizdat’ tapes and were only allowed to play live shows in a handful of strictly monitored venues.

Barred from state-run studios, underground musicians had to record their works in small communal apartments, with low budget instruments and makeshift DIY gear, thus setting themselves apart from the more polished sounds coming from the West.

This collection comes fully equipped with samples scored from rare Soviet synths, worn out guitars, old handheld radios, improvised effects processors and battered up drum-machines, all tracked on cassette and reel-to-reel tapes.

Japanese survival horror games of the PS1 era like Resident Evil, Parasite Eve or Silent Hill would feature specially designed rooms where you could save your game by accessing an old typewriter, a pay-phone or a notebook.

It’s no surprise that encountering on of these safe havens would be perceived as a genuine reward for the player, who would clash with ruthless bosses, tackle NPC hordes, rummage for items and solve difficult puzzles without the safety net of modern save game mechanics. 

Psychologically, the rooms would offer respite from the chaos of the world, and sonically, the musical themes would include soothing Satie-esque pianos, hazy harps, liminal atmospheres, slow-glow sequences, dreamcore bells or haunting 12bit choirs.

Save Room

The hyperkinetic sounds of ambient jungle and intelligent dnb served as OST’s for a multitude of racing, extreme sports and sci-fi console games from the mid 90’s to the early 00’s.

Games like Wipeout, Rage Racer, 1080 Snowboarding or Xtreme G-2 would introduce players to the world of sped-up, surgically programmed breakbeats, ecstatic pads, oceanic atmospheres, pummelling sub-bass and vibrant chord-vamps.

Taking shape in 80's Seattle, grunge took the world by storm in 1991, with highly influential albums dethroning some of the biggest pop-stars of all time.

Over-produced, posey and shallow acts were swiftly being replaced with bands that adopted a DIY sonic palette, had a modest, unassuming look and spoke to the disenchanted youth through introspective lyrics that touched on social alienation, addiction, self-doubt, helplessness and trauma.

Hard rock merged with punk and hardcore, with added elements of noise, indie rock and metal, welding screeching riffs slathered in fuzz and distortion, down-tuned arpeggios and grinding baselines with raw, galvanized drums and gruff, angsty vocals.
