As one of the key innovators of the meditative practice of Centering Prayer, he fashioned a powerful on-ramp to the Christian contemplative tradition. Yet, as beloved author and Keating disciple Cynthia Bourgeault shows, that was not the end of Keating’s story—his evolution as a spiritual thinker and mystic continued in ways few have explored in depth. The talk focuses on the translation of the text itself and how a master translator approaches such a daunting and challenging masterpiece. With a rich background of language expertise, deep knowledge of both Buddhist traditions and Western religion, and, most importantly, extensive involvement in Buddhist practice, Wulstan weaves his own experiences as a translator in with his interaction with the Bodhicharyavatara, specifically. He and Holly also discuss issues related to translating classical Sanskrit texts into Tibetan, by detailing the challenges of style, word choice, and considerations of audience—all while referencing different translations (Wallace, Crosby/Skilton, Batchelor, Eliot) to demonstrate how certain choices were made. Wulstan will share how the Padmakara Translation Group used Khenpo Kunpel’s commentary to inform their translation and discusses the complexities of presenting the text in English in a way that elevates the text rather than diminishes it.

During this intimate evening of inspirational stories shared at Open Secret Bookstore in San Rafael, California, in the Spring of 2010, Lama Tharchin Rinpoche relates the history of the Repkong yogi tradition founded by his ancestor, Palchen Namkha Jigme, a former hunter who discovered the true nature of samsara and sought a way out of its endless cycle, as well as stories of his own special upbringing in a ngakpa yogi family in Tibet. The Repkong ngakpas were famous and revered for both their not-so-ordinary ordinary accomplishments, as well as for their realization of supreme siddhis. Rinpoche, the tenth family lineage holder of the Repkong yogis, relates awe-inspiring stories of these powerful householder ngakpa practitioners, as well as his father’s influence on Rinpoche’s own spiritual development and maturation.
