GA-Mix_ LUllabies for Insomniacs

The music Aurora Halal creates is informed by many different disciplines. She is a producer, but also a videographer and visual artist who has worked on films about modular synth godfather Morton Subotnick amongst others. She is also the force behind Brooklyn’s Mutual Dreaming party series as well as the Sustain-Release festival. In just a couple of years she has cooked up an expressive and experimental techno sound—solo and with the likes of Ital—on labels such as Lovers Rock and her own Mutal Dreaming Recordings. Oppressive and foggy, her distorted, imperfect sounds made up of heavy drums and scurrying synths have taken her to plenty of remarkable live gigs all over the world. Now she steps up to our mix series with equal aplomb.

Meitei’s 2018 album Kwaidan was one of the year’s slow-burning successes. Originally released on cassette through Evening Chants, Kwaidan’s reputation eventually grew to such an extent that it was named one of the year’s best experimental albums by Pitchfork. To coincide with the first time vinyl release of Kwaidan, we have a mix from Meitei to share with you for Bleep Mix #81.

Meitei says - ’This mix is based on some old Japanese music that I have picked with the current Meitei theme of the “lost Japanese mood” as a reference. I remixed and edited the traditional music in my own style. 

There are places in Japan where the scenery expressed in this mix still survives. What will they look like in the new Japanese era “Reiwa”? At least I think it’s interesting to personally edit the footprints of the previous era to make such a mix. This made it possible to touch a world that I don’t even know.’

Alessandro Adriani is the head of @mannequin-label, a producer and DJ. He’s been responsible for a stream of quality releases, both on his label and elsewhere on imprints such as @stroboscopicartefacts, Jealous God and Pinkman. As a DJ his style is flamboyant while functional. Over the course of 60 minutes for his Bleep mix, we get a snapshot of some of the best techno in his crate at the moment.

Izabel approaches her dj sets with an inquisitive nature, taking raw excursions that explore abstract electronics, synthesized sounds and acoustics. Her studies in sound art and electroacoustic music in Melbourne, London and The Hague became the foundation for Lullabies for Insomniacs. The label and guest mix series is a beacon of curiosities which explores a wild sonic terrain that continues to unfold over the labels evolving catalogue.

Surveying vast sonic territories, her selections evolve throughout her sets, drawing for the unknown and the weird and wonderful. This mix for our series is a perfect example of her exploratory character, featuring roaming, lo-fi percussive workouts, cosmic vocal elements and far more that create a unique journey across the hour, guiding listeners into new sound worlds.

Extremenly pleased to share this set from Sawf in a truly amazing event we co-hosted with 3 Shades of Black. A  pure  lineup hosted Ancient Methods, ANFS Live and Morah, which occurred on the 18th of January 2020 at Temple Athens.

It was 6:30 in the morning when Sawf took over the decks in closing duty that lasted until 10, a night we will never forget and looking forward to live again. Enjoy the ride!
