In December 2018, Erdi Irmak embarked on another chapter in a successful music career with his "Hidden Arcadia" series on Proton Music. Fast forward to 2021 and the talented Turkish artist presents the sixth incarnation of the series with three new original tracks and a pair of remixes from Ireland and UAE based artists making up "Vol. 6".

"In Depth" is a typically impressive opener as a delicate percussive structure creates a central pillar from which smooth melodic branches grow organically around it. Gently pulsating pads add depth as an enveloping melodic trope creates a warm sonic blanket. "Far Apart" immediately showcases Erdi Irmak's trademark groove as a laidback rhythmic foundation replete with crunchy bass and rolling beat, paves the way for free-flowing melodic lines to meander across the 8-minute piece. Textured pads and white-noise effects complete a powerful narrative. The third original track sees "Around the River" delight with an intelligently worked cadence rippling across proceedings before syncopated synth phrases sit in perfect harmony. Developing with ease, a breakdown crescendo creates the sonic environment for the second half to become a hypnotic organic house triumph.

There are few more iconic names within the underground dance fraternity than, Silinder. Able to point to a plethora of Proton Music releases that include 2012's "Corrupt", 2013's "Solas" and 2014's "Basement", a clutch of remixes for the likes of Oliver Lieb, Derek Howell and Andre Sobota are now followed by a standout interpretation of "Nowhere Land". Originally part of "Vol. 5", the Silinder remix immediately impresses with its innovative use of melodic themes resonant in Erdi's original as a relaxed groove flows out of the 8-minute track with a hint of Lemon Jelly evident. Over an evolving sonic landscape, evocative chord progressions and the vocal cut central to the original, create a rich tapestry of sound woven to an expert conclusion in the second half to create a dynamic and colourful picture.

An artist who has seen his reputation grow steadily over the past 18 months, Ejaz Ahamed has seen a select crop of releases feature on the likes of Stellar Fountain, Perspectives Digital and OLD SQL. A quartet of remixes for Particles, not least in November 2020's reworking of Juan Deminicis' "Synchronicity", now sees the rising Dubai star make his Proton Music debut with a glorious reworking of "The Floating Bridge of Heaven". Originally appearing on "Vol. 4", the Ejaz Ahamed remix opens with strong framework of heavy beat, straight hi-hats and cavernous bassline. Unconstrained by the rhythmic backdrop, melodic motifs from the original float delicately in hypnotic patterns in juxtaposition to a rising filtered bass sweep. The result is a glorious combination of traditional dancefloor structure and unencumbered organic melody.

A sixth instalment sees Erdi Irmak joined by Silinder and Ejaz Ahamed to create a perfect "Hidden Arcadia".

Kicking off with a stomping, fan favorite mix of "Night Is On My Mind" by festival king Dillon Francis, Mechanical Remixes kicks into even higher gear with Nom De Strip's big room take on "Control," before pulling a moody left turn with Tchami's housey (dare we say jazzy!) version of "MYB," and closing out strong with a high-NRG remix of "Mechanical" by new young producer Values. Machine music never sounded so good!

A heavy, heavy remix package here from Hypercolour.  Step forward Bonobo, Kowton and Dark Sky, who all contribute stellar remixes of Maya Jane Coles’ “Don’t Put Me In Your Box” EP, originally out in 2011.

Bonobo seals a huge period of activity, including a rack of acclaimed albums for Ninja Tune, with an ethereal and sublime take on “Something In The Air”.  The remix cinematically sweeps over you, its rising melodies and tight percussions making this a standout job from Bonobo.

Bristol’s Joe Cowton AKA Kowton plucks for “Parallel Worlds” from Maya’s EP to get the once over, opting for a dancefloor-centric re-work.  Stripping things right back with big, distorted drums and strobe like percs, the Idle Hands and Livity Sound man affords us with a real sweat soaked warehouse banger of a remix. 

Wrapping up this remix package is the Dark Sky remix of  “Something In The Air”.  Whereas Bonobo took the Original to more heady territories, Dark Sky’s mix is underpinned with a rattling 4/4 groove and big subby sweeps, retaining the original’s melodic touches.  Dark Sky have been firing on all cylinders of late, releases on Tectonic and 50 Weapons, collaborations with Breach…and this remix further solidifies their credentials as a team to watch out for.

Not only does this release showcase a select few of the tracks that Nick (and a bunch of his fellow electronic titans) will be spinning throughout this year's Miami Music Week (and Winter Music Conference), but it highlights some tracks that have been instrumental for Nick in the past few months. Featuring debuts, variety and interesting collaborations, this is the sound of The Soundgarden distilled into eight wonderful tracks. Opening with Berni Turletti's 'Discovering Me', a deep throbbing bass and Middle-Eastern wails provide ample evidence of why Berni is starting to make ever bigger waves. Diego Poblets follows up with 'Karma', a lighter affair that's full of classy sonic touches and a strong lead. Kamilo Sanclemente teams up with Dabeat for 'Theory of Silence', a subtle melodic journey over 10 minutes that manages to be both resplendent and epic, while Memory & Ezequiel Arias work together on the eargasmic 'Shen'. Oliver and Tom deliver two strong releases; firstly, 'Remote Visions' is a deep, richly engaging warm up with emotive strings, while the complementing track 'Time Lapse' is a funky bongo-led groover with a spoken-word male vocal. Perfecto A&R, Oliver Harper makes his Soundgarden debut with 'Landrake' which follows on from the Buenos Aires duos vibe perfect(o)ly! Rounding out the pack is Irish wonder Shane Robinson with 'Gemini'. Soundtracky and evolving, this is mind music at its most pure from one of the best sound designers in the business. It's the perfect way to round off a fantastic sampler - if this doesn't get you in the mood for sun, sand and grooves, then we're not sure what will.
