As a follow up to the 70’s west African Funk and Afrobeat influenced Je-Ka-Lo!, Vuelo Nocturno sets out to be a reassuring statement of the duo’s production wizardry. With this record, the duo have managed to synthesis Cumbia and Afrocentric music traditions into a cohesive body of work.

El Remolon reaches deep down into his bag of tricks for a global bass inspired journey through the jungle, calling on a cast of producers from around the world to remix his 5th studio album, Selva. 

On his 2014 album El Remolon took us on a journey through mystic Peruvian jungles and the Buenos Aires rat race, intent on connecting the listener with a cosmic cumbia visceral experience no matter the environment.  On it we heard Rhodes pianos, shamanic ritual chants and a whole lot of bass.  The record, heavy in collaborations, featured Buenos Aires hip hop/dancehall/cumbia starlet Miss Bolivia, Ali Gua Gua from the Kumbia Queers and the masked Dengue Dengue Dengue from Peru, to name a few.  This time around El Remolon calls on producers from all corners of the globe to give their signature touches to Selva.   

  Remixers from Australia, Belgium, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador, Spain and Germany lend their wares for a truly “global bass” affair.  The Ecuadorian Nicola Cruz, ZZK’s newest signee, ever so intricately strips down Lido Pimienta’s Vestido, whereas cumbia meets trap on Flashback from one of the rising producers of the Buenos Aires digital cumbia scene, Esmink.  Chancha Via Circuito lends his signature hypnotic drum patterns on Energia Natural and Barrio Lindo closes out the album with an introspective dream quest with Mariela Gerez’s Quechua lyrics floating in space on Poyeyu.

Nicola Cruz is releasing the remixed version of his critically acclaimed 2015 album, Prender el Alma.  It will be released on June 10th on ZZK Records, and features remixes by 12 artists including label-mates History of Colour (El Buho & Barrio Lindo), Chancha Via Circuito, and sister label-mate EVHA.  

Inspired by electronic music techniques and local Andean music and culture, Cruz created the original sounds in Prender el Alma layer by layer, instrument by instrument, drum by drum.  A cast of eclectic Latin American artists seamlessly pick up where Nicola left off, adding their unique flavor to each individual track.

Jackson was born in Paraíba, Brazil,  his mother, Flora Mourão, was a musician and singer who played several percussion instruments. As a child he had originally wanted to play the accordion, but his parents could not afford it and bought him a pandeiro, a type of tambourine, in its place. When Jackson was 13 years old his family moved to Campina Grande, a city in Paraíba. After the move, Jackson lived in João Pessoa, where he performed in various cabarets and on the radio; and also to Recife, where he eventually began working in a radio station and took the pseudonym of Jackson do Pandeiro. Originally his mother had nicknamed him "Jack", after the actor Jack Perry, who played parts in cowboy films which were popular in Brazil during Jackson's youth.

I flew to Rio from London in September 1983, for a 4-5 weeks studio session. 33 years later, i'm still here.
I couldn’t sleep all night; a fog-horn was groaning incessantly on the Sound, and I tossed half-sick between grotesque reality and savage frightening dreams. Toward dawn I heard a taxi go up Raone’s drive and immediately I jumped out of bed and began to dress—I felt that I had something to tell him, something to warn him about and morning would be too late. Crossing his lawn I saw that his front door was still open and he was leaning against a table in the hall, heavy with dejection or sleep. ‘Nothing happened,’ he said wanly. ‘I waited, and about four o’clock she came to the window and stood there for a minute and then turned out the light.’ His house had never seemed so enormous to me as it did that night when we hunted through the great rooms for cigarettes.
We pushed aside curtains that were like pavilions and felt over innumerable feet of dark wall for electric light
switches—once I tumbled with a sort of splash upon the keys of a ghostly piano. There was an inexplicable amount of dust everywhere and the rooms were musty as though they hadn’t been aired for many days. I found the humidor on an unfamiliar table with two stale dry cigarettes inside. Throwing open the French windows of the drawing-room we sat smoking out into the darkness, watching the sky and listening to “NEEMA EP”.

This is what happened. On the night that the worst heat wave in Polynesia history finally broke-that night of July 19-entire Bora-Bora was lashed with the most vicious thunderstorm I have ever seen. We lived on Pound Low, and we saw the first of the storms beating its way across the water toward us just before dark. For an hour before, the air had been utterly still. The heat was like a solid thing, and it seemed as deep as a sullen quarry-water. That afternoon we had gone swimming, but the water was no relief unless you went out deep. We came back to the house and we sat without talking much, smoking and looking across the sullen flat mirror of the sea, a few powerboats droned back and forth. The thunderheads were getting closer, pushing away the blue. There was no doubt now that a storm was coming. The clouds twisted and rolled, now black, now purple, now veined, now black again. And the storm came over……..That was when it started getting dark….but no, that’s not exactly right. My thought at the time was not that it was getting dark but that the lights in the market has gone out. I looked up at the fluorescents in a quick reflex action, and I wasn’t alone. And at first, until I remembered the power failure, it seemed that was it, that was what had changed the quality of the light, then I remembered they had been out all the time we had been in the market and things hadn’t seemed dark before. Then I knew, even before the people at the window started to yell and point.
The mist was coming. It came with lazy speed. It was white and bright but non-reflecting. It was coming fast, and it had blotted out most of the sun.

Dj, producteur et tête pensante de Bab Musique, Switch « Groov » Experience (@sg-exp) trace son chemin musical depuis plus de 15 ans, accumulant projets (Jazzistic, Jazz Attitudes, Highlife dernièrement) et sorties discographiques, dont un dernier album d’inspiration afro-électronique intitulé cotonouenmusique, première étape du projet musiqueaupoing?, un voyage audiovisuel à travers l’Atlantique noir.

Amoureux du jazz, en particulier, mais disons-le, de la musique en général, il campe à la croisée des chemins. Avec Coltrane dans un coin de la tête, Detroit à l’horizon, David Mancuso comme ressource et l’Atlantique noir pour territoire, son identité musicale est à l’image de notre temps. Elle circule. Sa musique se veut donc hybride, comme un pont lancé entre l’esprit du jazz, la profondeur de la house, la légèreté de la disco et l’écrin des musiques africaines. Il réalise l’émission Open Sky, diffusée sur Radio Campus Clermont-Fd et Groovalizacion Radio.
