First of all, I can't do as much justice obviously as the amazing Cyndi Lauper who sings it with soo much emotion! But I tried lol. This is perhaps my favourite song from her, and this song is dedicated to people who are having a hard time with dealing with life and who are depressed. Keep going :) <3

I absolutely love the meaning of this song:

The song has Christian influence and is written from the perspective of a man that committed suicide by jumping out of the window of a tall building. 

He is in purgatory writing this letter, although we hear it as a song. We can assume he is in purgatory because he took his own life.  He’s writing the letter to several people. 

Each recipient is addressed in the song with the intro of “Please, remember me”, followed by a word(s) of how he wants to be remembered by that person / entity. 

They are (in order as mentioned in the song):

a boy (childhood friend) – remember me happily
a girl (his first crush) – remember me fondly
a monkey (a friend of his who he goofed off with) – remember me like I was on Halloween
a man (a stranger who saw him jump to his death) – remember me mistakenly
God – (God) – remember my innocence as a baby, not my adult mistakes
Lucifer – (The Devil) – remember my misery, not my soul
An angel kissing on a sinner (the love of his life) – remember me seldomly
The outline and clue to this meaning is given in the final stanza.  The writer is using the metaphor of earthly life as a circus and he as a trapeze swinger. 

He has not been to heaven or hell yet but is in waiting.  While he is waiting he has contact with other people in waiting who have been there longer.  His ultimate afterlife fate is yet to be determined. 

The stanza’s are broken down chronologically below but to understand who he is singing to from beginning to end you have to get the outline in the final stanza first.

Imagine what it might be like in purgatory after having committed suicide.  What would you be thinking? 

Who would you be thinking about? 

What memories would come to your mind? 

How would you view your time on earth?
