Heralded as one of the pioneers of the Asian Massive movement, Sharaab has been pushing the boundaries of electronic music for over a decade. From his critically acclaimed solo work on Infusion (2003) & Evolution (2007) to his tenure with Atlanta synth-pop mavens, The Fabric, Sharaab has seamlessly integrated vintage synthesizers and electronics, dark-edged industrial beats, lush ambient chords, and Eastern instrumentation to create a signature sound which he calls Ethnoclash.

On Asura, Sharaab focuses his talents on fusing traditional Indian music and modern dubstep. From the opening reedy chords and subdued wobbly bass drops of “Exodust,” to the catchy Bollywood hooks over hard-edged bass lines of “Illah,” Asura paints a hyperrealist portrait of an otherwise unlikely landscape. “Tryst of Fate” is hard and in your face -- yet has beautifully integrated chants and atmospherics, while “Vivekonandrum” introduces glitchy experimentations and chopped female vocals. “Citilites” brings the listener back with its controlled wobbles and synthesizers and really ties the room together.

In addition to the eight original tracks, Asura is closed out by five remixes from Nophi’s all-star cast of Atlanta-based electronic musicians; citizenGreen, Tay0, Reklein, R_Garcia, and Sonny Hancock. With uncommonly warm music for the winter months, Sharaab has delivered a timeless masterpiece in a largely disintegrating genre. Pioneer of the Asian Massive movement, Sharaab (aka Saurabh Bose) brings something just a bit different to Goa Chillout Zone. Sharaab calls his style ethnoclash, combining traditional Eastern instruments, electro beats, and deep dubstep wobbles to create a fusion of world music with electronic sounds. Though he is better known for driving beats and moving bodies on dance floors, with “Skyfall”, he revs things down to a more cerebral level.

“Skyfall” breathes into the listener’s ear. A tide of sound rises and recedes and rises again. Layers of melodic instruments build and wash out of the speakers. Then the beat comes in. It doesn’t drop; it blooms. And there is no mistaking Sharaab’s signature global sound. Cut up female vocals hint at a lyric that the conscious brain can’t quite grasp, but if you just close your eyes, you might understand…

Whereas most dubstep artists are known for their heavy beats and wobbles, Sharaab’s melodics have always set him apart. “Skyfall” pulls all that to the forefront, washing over the listener in waves. Lyrics hide, and ghost vocals play at the back of the listener’s waking mind. An electric talwar is a type of laser sword or sabre originating from Armagarh, on the subcontinent of Āryāvarta. It consists of a polished metal hilt which projects a curved beam of light about 1.33 metres long. The electric talwar is the signature weapon of the Kshatriya warriors and their Asura counterparts, both of whom can use them for close combat, or to deflect blaster bolts. The electric talwar's blade cuts through most substances without resistance. It leaves cauterized wounds in flesh, but can be deflected by another talwar's blade, or by energy shields. An active electric talwar gives off a distinctive hum, which rises in pitch and volume as the blade is moved rapidly through the air. Bringing the sabre into contact with an object or another talwar's blade produces a loud crackle. Unlike the traditional lightsabre, the talwar is used for cutting rather than thrusting. However, expert opinion has suggested that the talwar, due to its effectiveness and successful use in battle in the Āryāvarta subcontinent, may have contributed to the design of the modern-day lightsabre.
