Into Nowhere sees them picking up where 2016’s acclaimed Soft Days left off, taking the dream pop sound palette of that record up a notch and twisting it around in the process. It’s a song that swerves and dives, the verse’s arpeggiated fatalism giving way to first defiance, then full blooded euphoria in the choruses. Clear eyed and buoyant, it’s the sound of winter giving way to spring.

A runaway carousel, if you get on it, it shoots you straight to Mars. But the planet's atmosphere happens to be breathable and the frugal red vegetation makes you feel you are in Paradise. "Juglar Child on the Carousel” would undoubtedly be the soundtrack of such Paradise.

Monteagle is the solo moniker of Justin Giles Wilcox - best know as chief songwriter in Nassau and now defunct Tennessee band Moonlight Bride. The later of which had some early looks, collapsing just on the brink of break out success. Paste Magazine calling Wilcox’s delivery in a “Best of What’s Next” feature “tremulous, bare-souled vocals, which are as haunted and alluring as the caves that riddle the rocky hills of the band’s hometown.”  Monteagle, named for a mountain inside those hills marks a re-birth for the now well seasoned indie rock vet. Expanding on the more ethereal, dreamy inclinations of past work into something closer to the history of those hills. 

Midnight Noon is the project’s first full length album and embodies a collection of songs written about growing up in rural Tennessee, moving to New York City and looking back at the once discarded landscape with a deeper understanding and appreciation of rural America's hidden beauty. The album envelops a slow focus, working in honest observations and simple truths. It's an origin story sonically toying with Americana and Folk and placing it in a more urban, textural context. 

The aim here was to get back to Justin’s roots, to take all of those past experiences and channel them into something both nostalgic and modern. On the album’s title track Wilcox croons “I still can’t erase anything I’ve seen”, and that line speaks to the truths he’s getting at here. We all work hard to grow past our particular upbringing, but sometimes it’s worth reflecting to get at who we truly are in the modern American landscape and to better understand our place in the world. 

The album was written recorded and produced by Justin Giles Wilcox and members of the Monteagle live band in a old church in upstate New York, mixed in Justin’s home studio in Brooklyn and mastered by Doug Van Sloun (Bright Eyes, Songs: Ohia, M. Ward) in Omaha Nebraska. Midnight Noon will see release on November 30th 2018 on Fire Talk Records.

Monteagle - East LA

Corey Cunningham's Business of Dreams is all about emotional catharsis. When his father passed away a few years ago, Cunningham took leave from his long-running Bay Area/LA musical partnerships Magic Bullets and Terry Malts to return to his home state of Tennessee to grieve and confront his past.

Making music to cope with this loss resulted in Business of Dreams' lovely eponymous debut album, an unexpected pop pleasure that wound up on Bandcamp's and Raven Sings The Blues' year-end lists for 2017. Soon the live version of Business Of Dreams took shape as Cunningham opened for Rogue Wave on a national tour and played scores of local shows with Frankie Rose, Real Estate and many others.

With his new album "Ripe For Anarchy," Cunningham has honed the songwriting with an eye towards regret, existence, and perseverance. "When I’m gone you won’t cry for me, focus on the moment, be free," he sings on "Chasing That Feeling." And that’s the mantra here: it’s time to let go. "The album is about living in the moment, shedding neurosis, and the desire to discard the general societal malaise we’ve been roped into."

"Ripe For Anarchy" is a through-and-through ode to indie pop, in the historic definition of the genre. "My Old Town" and "N.R.E.A.M." could be album cuts on a Grant McLennan solo album, "Don’t Let Our Time Expire" and "Naive Scenes" could be The Smiths, the Sparklehorse cover "The Hatchet Song" bears an uncanny resemblance to Australian pop pioneers Even As We Speak, and "I Feel Dread" has the unmistakable earmarks of The Field Mice.

And while he may be more noted for playing guitar in Terry Malts, Smokescreens, and Merge Records' Mike Krol's backing band, Cunningham is most at home making soft sounds extolling the wounded and mournful. "I think music is the most personal of mediums. You can work and listen, you can run and listen, you can drive and listen. And I think I’m a misfit. If I can make the most personal music for misfits, then I’m satisfied."
