Iced chillness. Great track. This part hints at the mystery of what might lay beneath the ice cap on Europa. I like this unrelenting synth backing this, with the more easygoing melody on top. Nice. Thanks for making good music.

Solid Steel Radio Show 15/1/2016 Hour 1 - AKASE

Europa - if you're looking in our solar system for extra-terrestrial life-forms, that's where the actions is, according to the vast swathe of scientific opinion.

This moon of Jupiter has a scarred covering of ice over a vast ocean. Due to its proximity to the huge gravitational pull of Jupiter, it's a fair bet that the ocean is warm enough to support life. If the planned mission to land and drill through the ice to the ocean goes ahead in 2020, we'll know for sure.

Arthur C Clarke made much of this potential for life in his book "2010", where the forces who created humanity in "2001: A Space Odyssey" warn off exploring humans in order to nurture the new life on Europa.

In the book, the joint Russian-American expedition to Jupiter is overtaken by the Chinese, who race ahead of them to Europa with a water-powered ship, with the plan of landing, drilling down, refilling their fuel tanks and then heading home.

They do indeed land on Europa, but their powerful arc-lights attract some enormous, blundering, inquisitive creature from the depths, which smashes through the ice and consigns them all to a remote, icy death.

There have been a lot of whispers and rumours about Thom Yorke's Atoms for Peace project since the band formed in 2009 to play The Eraser live. In the new issue of Dazed & Confused, the fabled frontman clears up the speculation surrounding Amok, his first group album outside of Radiohead, with one of his most in-depth interviews to date. He also talks frankly about his life and work, discussing his uneasy relationship with fame, that video for "Lotus Flower" and why he's still intent on bending people's heads of out shape. 

Also, stay tuned to Dazed Digital over the next fortnight, as we'll be enrolling 14 of today's most innovative producers, including Actress, Machinedrum, Flying Lotus and Arca, into "The University of Yorke". They'll be asking Thom a series of burning questions, plus much, much more.

Until then, we thought we'd get you in the mood by asking the man himself to make us an, ahem, A-Thomic mix of some of his favourite tunes. Little did we realise that he would go into the studio with Nigel Godrich and emerge with 25 minutes of unreleased solo material and remixes. Suffice to say, it's essential listening.
