This mix is a bunch of sounds and concepts I’ve been exploring through the last year that has to do with memory, tierra, familia, nuances of connection to territory--Isla, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Antillano, Globalization, Diaspora--music as a transference mechanism--Dembow, Palo, Club, Black Music is the root of all Music, History--Black Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, Black Caribbean, Black Sea, Black Ocean--Afro-Indigenous History-Memories-Dreams-Speculations. What it means to be the first entry point, the first project; what it means to have a door of no return. Cicatrices, tempo, beats, percussive voice, untold history retold through transference mechanisms of music, sound, repetition, ritual, somatic memory, altar memory....the list weaves on like the braids that held maps and seeds or the plant fibers of cana or guana used for caps, rugs, roofs--weave through the blends hopefully summoning up a memory or a connection that lies there within you, latent in the marrow of our bones.

Maldita Vaina x Afrohunting [Oroko Radio] (18 July 2023)

In this show, I will explore the connection across global Black diasporic rhythms from dancehall, to reggaeton, dembow, amapiano, afrobeats, baile funk, hip hop, club music, and more. I plan to also interview guests (if possible) and create unique sets spotlighting the origins and fusion across these genres.

Maldita Vaina (@malditavaina) joins MLE for a very special guest mix on RIDDIM CNXN EP 3: FEMMEBOW, an exploration of the women/femmes in modern Caribbean music. FEMMEBOW is also an all new biweekly femme/queer event in Houston, TX hosted by MLE and produced by @tumbao.htx.

Maldita Vaina is a Lesbiana Prietx artist, facilitator, and open format DJ based in Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana exploring Black, Afro, Caribx memories, history and imagination through sound.

Los proyectos de Maldita Vaina @malditavaina son exégesis de sus identidades y experiencias como persona negrx (dominicanx sudanés) trans no-binaria. En su trabajo, la música  es un dispositivo de transmisión de contra-narrativas y al mismo tiempo tecnología para activar-conectar corporalidades. Su investigación explora conceptos como la memoria, el archivo, Black Futures. Vive en Itabo, República Dominicana.

Sobre su Especial Mix para desculonización: “Esta mezcla es un escape sonoro y un gesto donde experimentó con un especie de encantamiento sonoro para invocar y despertar lo que necesita brotar dentro de cada unx de nosotres. Lo que resulta son unos paisajes sonoros de un club fantástico caribeño—saturado, misterioso, colorido y fugaz.”

This mix is a selection of tunes that accompanied my 2024 summer and didn't get played in any of my London sets. Although, many of the artists did feature in those sets. Mix if full of newer release from Black and LGBTQIA+ electronic music makers. It’s genreless, global and diasporic, like me, like many of us. 

Mix starts off house-y vibes with a beautiful track from ARN4L2 "Caribe", a nod to my home, bringing you into the soundscape then straight into a lush amapiano-baile-house vibe from Evehive.  Moving from house-y Caribbean and Arab vibes, to dembow and deconstructed club sounds, eventually building into a pulsing global dance floor, returning back to the Caribbean, and the island of Ayiti with the closing rhythms of Palos, Dembow, Gagá, and Haitian Rasin by activist and singer Sò Anne in long conversation with Chicago Juke, a historical connection between the etymology of the word Juke from Wolof and the first Black rebellion in the Dominican Republic. 

Working on my mic play, and there's nothing like a crash and burn mix-in at the end, but here it is. Thank you so much for listening. I'd love to hear your feelings and thoughts in the comments.

Este mix es una selección de canciones que acompañaron mi verano de 2024 y que no logré tocar en ninguno de mis sets en Londres. Sin embargo, muchxs de las artistas sí sonaron . El mix está repleto de nuevos lanzamientos de creadores negrxs y LGBTQIA+ de música electrónica--sin género, globales y diaspóricos.

El mix comienza con un sople de house con el hermoso tema de ARN4L2 "Caribe", un guiño a mi territorio, que te transporta al paisaje sonoro y directo a una exuberante onda de amapiano-baile-house de Evehive. Pasando del house caribeño y árabe, al dembow y sonidos de club deconstruidos, finalmente se convierte en una vibrante pista de baile global, regresando al Caribe y a la isla de Ayiti con los ritmos finales de Palos, Dembow, Gagá y Rasin haitiano de la activista y cantante Sò Anne en una larga conversación con Chicago Juke, una conexión histórica entre la etimología de la palabra Juke del wólof y la primera rebelión negra en la República Dominicana.

Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when planning this mix, and what type of listening environment could you imagine it being easily enjoyed in? 

A. I actually looked through my rekordbox history from a recent Animalia night I played in Naarm and drew some inspiration from that. When listening back to the mix I can imagine it being played for a semi-casual game of Futsal or something like that. I feel like there are some light-footed tracks in there that would be useful to some nimble futsal players. 

Q. Are there any songs in the mix that are especially close to your heart, and what is it about these cuts that resonate with you so much?

A. Mata by Nidia & Valentina

It's taken off  a truly sublime Album that I draw lots of inspiration from. It's simultaneously organic and loose and club-playable, which is a tough one to get right. It's something I’m constantly trying to achieve but they seem to have done it effortlessly.

I actually tried to google to see if I’ve ever put this tune in another guest mix before. I probably have, so I’ll apologise for that now. Cliques has always had a big influence on me since I started producing music. They’ve since stopped producing themselves which is a shame but I always play their old tunes out if I can. RIP Cliques..

Q. One of the things I’ve been fascinated with in your DJ sets (the Sustain-Release set for example) is your mixing of polyrhythms to seamlessly bridge tempos throughout a set. How did you first get inspired to experiment with this style and what are some of otherwise conflicting genres/sounds that have blended nicely?

A. My DJing style is at times an extension of my music production. I think this might be a good example of that. The sustain release transition from 150 to 100 is using a tune that I produced years ago in a 3/4 time signature. I’ve produced a few tunes over the past few years that are able to do that. It just allows me at times to bounce around to different worlds and stops me from feeling stuck in a tempo-range. I haven’t done it so much recently but I’d like to get back into doing it. It can create a really strange feeling for the audience. At Sustain-Release, a lot of the audience were on hallucinogens so it felt appropriate to get trippy in that way. It's harder to pull off in a nightclub environment.

I’m no longer sure what the original inspiration for experimenting with this style was. Playing a lot of tunes that have a polyrhythm in them can often make you feel like you have the option to dance at two different tempos.
