It’s hard to overstate the importance of ‘The Final Frontier’ in shaping modern electronic music. First released in 1992 by the unapologetically political Detroit collective, Underground Resistance, it remains an essential classic in the story of Techno. Underground Resistance’s stated objective was to “[electrify] the inner city with hi-tech, sci-fi thoughts and dreams”; to offer working-class Black Americans, through music, a vision of a bright future through community action. Final Frontier was the first of many tracks which underlined this mission in bold type.

The great Afrofuturist tradition of imagining Black emancipation through space travel is upfront; both in the Star Trek-referencing title, as well as in the music itself, which sounds like the perfect re-scoring to the “Stargate” scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Now, nearly 30 years after it was first unleashed, there is not a serious techno fan who does not consider this to belong on the highest echelon of electronic music’s Pantheon.

Große Gefühle, all night long, wir nähern uns so langsam wieder irdischen Gefilden, kein Problem, Empfang ist gut, Pop ist auch da, grooved wie Sau, muss man laut hören, bisschen weichgekocht, höchste Zeit, den Euphoriefinger wieder Richtung Himmel zu werfen und ein bisschen rumzuwinken, kommt ganz unverhofft eine Bassline dahergeschmunzelt und Zack, passt wie Arsch uff Eimer, also Hände runter, Arsch gewackelt, Rimshot, Virginia, übernehmen Sie, macht sie, gut, schon Outro-Zeit?, ne, geht noch was, Planningtorock auf der Überholspur und schön Vandalismus, danach verpassen wir den Takt, Gerd ist aber eine geile Sau und das macht deswegen nichts, überhaupt, alle Seelen eingepackt und nochmal schnell versprochen, dass es gut werden wird, danach kommt Richi mit den großen Gefühlen im kleinen Breakbeat und im letzten Augenblick eine Gorillabande mit einem Tütchen Sonnenschein. Dann ist vorbei. Nochmal? Warum nicht.

Exclusive Cowboy Rhythmbox - 6AM Cowboy (Cowboy Rhythmbox Deviation Variation)

British “outsider-electronic duo“ Cowboy Rhythmbox return to Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound with a  none-existing musical approach up to date from the cowboys Nathan Gregory Wilkins and Richard X themselves. As Detroit producer Sharif Laffrey took on remix duties for CR's 6AM Nathan and Richard remixed the remix of the track, expressing their appreciation of Sharif's work. The result of the remix remix, simply called Deviation Variation, falls into the category creative remarkableness. A lush yet bouncey bass line is equipped with sharp reverbing chords and blurry synths while partly implemented filter hi-hat rides and mono-alternating vocal-snippets are swaying from left to right. The remix reaches musical exellence once the disorted and echoing chord sequence makes its appearance adding a warm vitalness to the wild west Detroit-shooting.

Cowboy Rhythmbox's EP 6AM Cowboy is released on Phantasy Sound on April 10th, 2020.
