Oli XL - Clumsy (Rokko San Afterhours Edit)

'For the past couple of years, my friends and I have had a tradition of spending Kekri together in a cottage in the woods. We mark the ancient celebration using contemporary tools: we make masks with lichen, card and a glue-gun and we soak the Kekri Pukki in kerosene to be burnt. This is no nostalgic reenactment of an invented past; we are using rituals to imagine a way of relating to nature that embraces the modern and the technological. Smartphones are welcome.'

It's the twilight of the year and the days are waning. The last person to awake is affectionately named the 'köyri'. After a year of heartbreak, hedonism and hard work, I’m tired, so it’s not a surprise that the köyri is me. As I drift out of sleep, I smell pancakes - their scent wafting up from the kitchen. We’ll have to eat 9 times today for good luck, and not forget to leave something out for the spirits too. 

In the early afternoon, we venture out to forage for mask-making materials. Someone remarks that the distant forest resembles a giant barcode, but my eyes are trained on the trees immediately surrounding me. They’re adorned with old man’s beard and the rocks with damp moss, but then my attention is caught by four brightly coloured strands of plastic string hanging from a fence. I think they’ll make for good hair; materials given a new life as the facial features of soon-to-be born creatures. 

I’m on dinner duty this evening; frying onions in turmeric, garam masala and lots of butter. We take it in turns to cook for everyone and, through this agreement, we each embark on our individual cycle of rest and work, receiving and giving. This cycle is replicated in the emotional and spiritual worlds, too. Any site of co-existence should entail reciprocity and, as such, we alternate between supporting, and being supported by, one another. One of us holds forth in conversation over lunch, entertaining us all with her anecdotes but, later on, she becomes scared and cries, and so we hold her. I think this is what making kin looks like; a dance of interdependence that is a little like breathing.

As I lie in bed, the covers pulled up to my chin, my hair is still a little damp from the sauna. I’m excited when I catch myself drifting off; relishing the moment between waking and sleeping, when the veil between the worlds is thin. My consciousness feels somehow delicate, trembling slightly as it navigates this transition. I can hear my friend breathing softly; it comforts me.

Seattle-born, Philadelphia-based DJ and producer ESTOC is representative of a generation of artists who see popular music club edits, techno, hardstyle, gabber, industrial, ambient and drone as different frequencies in the same waveform. Citing sci-fi and horror movies, video games and global culture as crucial influences, she’s a voracious, musically omnivorous listener who can dial up a stylistic allusion or reference at a moment's notice while delivering her messages and values with a refreshing combination of humour and sincerity.

ESTOC’s inaugural contribution to our new mix series begins with a thunderous roar and ends with crooning whispers wrapped in an enveloping swirl of synthesisers. Along the way, she plays with tension and release with a deft touch, locating the beauty, brutality, calmness and chaos inherent within a perfectly poised series of juxtapositions. Over its 58 minutes and 14-second running time, her DJ mix reveals itself as a form of climate change-corroded 21st-century futurism that perfectly encapsulates the HI-FI SCI-FI ethos.

The 42nd release of katharsis is the collaborative album “Soft Space” by label founder jjjacob and various other artists from around the world, coming out on May 31st. The album works as a sequel to his previous full-length release "Brutal Nature" from 2022, both in terms of the collaborational dogma in production but also in the thematic connection and contrast between the brutality of nature and the softness of space. All tracks emerged as infantile jjjacob sketches, then taking more form and gaining inspirational matter from the collaborating artists' conduct and care, before finally being concluded by the final touches of jjjacob again.

The result is as the title suggests smooth and gentle at most times, but it does though have more wicked and harsh moments and aspects throughout the album. The emotional journey of the album keeps pendulating between the pleasant floating sensations of celestial emptiness and the brute mysticality of the unknown. At times it feels aerodynamic or dissolving, at others it tastes crispy and anthemic, but the overall output is definitely ethereal and cosmic.
