Príncipe OG @djnk brings the ghetto sound of Lisbon on a contribution to the podcast series.

A key proponent of Lisbon's kuduro sound, first exposure came via a 2006 compilation that has since achieved cult status. Introducing a spectrum of hyper-local sounds, ‘DJs Do Guetto’ took a unique slant on rhythms of the African diaspora, specifically those native to Angola. In turn, it laid foundations for what would become one of the most consistently intriguing, boundary-pushing labels about.

Where a 2016 Lit City Trax debut embraced hybridity in a straight-for-the-jugular assault of batida, kuduro and tarraxinha, N.K. has also shared Príncipe engineering duties with the legendary Tó Pinheiro da Silva. And now, after all this time, he’s back on the label with some original music. 

Gracing the long awaited second volume to that aforementioned compilation with no fewer than three new tracks, this mix also deploys mutant club styles to devastating effect. Teriyaki Boyz-sampling kuduro to an N.K. remix of some classic Atlanta trap, it goes very hard.

“With this mix I wanted to show the contrast between the recent N.K. versus the old. 

It’s a journey from the present to the past, culminating in Marfox's latest track in collaboration with Tristany and Pongo titled De.Gra.De (its appearance at Eurovision was another super important step in our style of music that we don't stop believing in).

DJ NIGGA FOX - Má Rotina

An exclusive mix of unreleased material from one of club music's limitless innovators: DJ Nigga Fox, aka Rogério Brandão, is a key figure amongst the crew of DJs and producers who have emerged from Lisbon's Angolan diaspora; they are responsible for the kinetic, pioneering current of sound that truly represents a time, a place, and a culture-in-the-making. This mix comes ahead of Rogério's new LP, which will be released on Príncipe on March 15th.

Even amongst his peers, Nigga Fox's timbre is unmistakable. Often described as an amalgamation of kuduro, afro-house, Angolan deep, and tarraxinha, Rogério's unique spin on the batida sound gets more specific because of his love of techno. The opening track, “Má Rotina”, is a new song from his upcoming album, but the calm ambience is a feint; this mix highlights his penchant for weaving warped beats and hypnotic hooks into something sensual and serpentine. Nigga Fox manages to achieve that rarest of combinations: being original and being good.  

As a language, this music is fresh, informed by the compression of global culture, the texture of digital music software, and the intertwined threads of colonial history. The trademark blend of frenzied polyrhythms— a rollercoaster of inversions, switchbacks, and corkscrews—and pulsing melodies—delirious, sinister, elemental—is fully present, but grand piano refrains and pastoral synth-scapes expand Rogério's musical world in new directions: "Any comparison in mind? Flip through history books and you won't find this chapter."

Hailing from Durban, South Africa, the trio Omagoqa consisting of Andile Mazibuko (Ma_A), Franco Makhathini (KB) and Njabulo Sibiya (Chase), are the vanguard of a new generation of artists ushering in a new wave of Gqom.

Calling their take on Gqom ‘uThayela’ & ‘Is’qinsi’,  it's a rougher sound with a harder bassline that it is made for clubs. ‘uThayela’ translates literally to “corrugated iron” which you find being used as roofing material on most South African homes), while ‘Is’qinsi’ is described as an infusion between ‘uThayela’ and the electronic sounds generally associated with the influences they incorporate from electronic music genres from outside of South Africa. 

Having been together for over 10 years, the trio have worked alongside some of SA's biggest artists, including a recent run of collaborations with titans such as DBN Gogo, DJ Lag & Dee Traits, but also collaborations with UK legend Scratcha DVA, showing that ten years into their career they barely just begun.
