Jake Muir is a Berlin based sound artist, DJ and field recordist. He approaches his practice as a listener first, carefully curating, layering and processing sounds that help him deconstruct and contextualize his lived experiences and influences. Using investigative software methodologies, DJ techniques and engineering dexterity, Muir makes deeply personal sonic art that fluidly traverses genre membranes, encouraging reflection and sometimes prompting psychedelic states.

This mix is essentially a studio distillation of the two DJ sets I played during bathing hours at Washington Baths in Portland, Maine last year, for @poolemusicltd. Beyond the aquatic aesthetics tying back to saunas and my time spent living in California and Seattle, it is also inspired by an essay I discovered while trying to find cover art for Bathhouse Blues. “Spiritual dimensions of self-transformation in Sydney’s gay bathhouses”, by Jason Prior and Carole Cusack, explores how gay bathhouses were viewed as places of worship by the patrons and what transpired there as being “rituals”. Given this backdrop, there are various references in the mix, both literal and figurative, to said dimensions associated with rituals and spirituality.

Lulled into melancholic tales by other joe (@josephbuchan), musician, producer and label head from Melbourne, a city that has given me so much in musical terms. This mix —sketched for loved ones— signifies the 100th landmark at FR, which I celebrate as an enduring and beautiful journey through the ever-expanding music realm. Two hours of ambient and dreamy downtempo compositions from Dearborn, Michigan husband-and-wife duo Windy & Carl. Eschewing the more commonly used synthesizers popular with other ambient artists, the duo generate their shimering soundscapes predominantly stem from guitar and bass, with effects, e-bows and more.

False Aralia gracing the Motion Cast with his first publicly available studio mix. Infectiously rhythmic, varied, primitive sounds from a person who’s been making some of my favorite music of the last decade. Those who spend the time connecting the dots between his various projects are in for a realll treat. This one feels like a subconscious (or maybe intentional?) selection of songs that highlight many of the lovable things about his productions, explored through the lens of music across a spectrum of time and moods.
