Into The Blue

Kenmore was a mental institution for voluntary and housed patient's suffering all types of mental anguish, as John was voluntary i was able to pick him up on Fridays to go and do weekend gigs, providing he was released. The waiting room was actually the lounge area housing about 200 or so inmates all with different infliction  and boy was i out of place, complete and utter madness reigned supreme here all control by some level of drug intoxication. 
The mental health crisis that John was facing, our bass players, impacted the entire band. Now, bass players are the backbone of any band. They keep the rhythm tight, and the groove solid. But what happens when the person holding the band together is struggling with their mental health? It’s a question that doesn't get asked often enough. Imagine this- You're in a band, and your bass player—your rock, your foundation—starts showing signs of mental illness. Maybe they’re more withdrawn, or their playing becomes erratic. Suddenly, the chemistry that made your music special begins to falter. The band dynamic changes, and not in a good way. It's not just about hitting the right notes. Music is deeply emotional. When one member is struggling, it affects everyone's performance, creativity, and connection. The energy on stage isn't the same. Rehearsals become tense. It's like the soul of the band is in turmoil. Mental health issues can be debilitating, and the pressure to perform only makes it worse. For bass players, who often feel like the unsung heroes of the band, this can be especially tough. They might not feel comfortable speaking up, worried about letting the band down or being seen as weak. But here’s the thing- ignoring the problem won't make it go away. Bands need to create a supportive environment where members feel safe to express their struggles. Open communication is key. It’s crucial to check in with each other, not just about music, but about mental well-being too. If your bass player—or any band member, for that matter—is facing mental health challenges, encourage them to seek help. Professional counselling, therapy, or even just talking to someone can make a huge difference. And remember, it’s okay to take a break. Sometimes stepping back is necessary for healing and coming back stronger. To all the bass players out there- You matter. Your mental health matters. And to all the bands- Take care of each other. Music is about connection and shared passion. Let’s make sure that connection remains strong and healthy. This is song reflect the feelings and emotions i had within them walls of Kenmore

Synth ambassadors Birdsnake create their own brand of psychedelic infused downtempo electronica, exploring the line between digital and organic. A free-flowing sensory experience, the band seamlessly combines acid jazz, droney textures and dubbed out rhythms. New single ‘Hydrostatic Pressure’ shares familial qualities with previous release ‘Rare Amulet’ that feel aquatic in sound, yet are contrasted with a dance floor focused tempo and darker instrumentation. Hydrostatic Pressure is released on Thursday 28th August, and is the second single taken from the band’s debut album ‘Biofilter’, slated for release on Friday 14th November via Bathtub Music.

Shimmering chimes and pads of wind-like synthesisers slowly build to a cascade of bubbling percussion and flutters of flute. Charging four-to-the-floor kick drum bursts through, with shuddering sound effects intermingled with deep horn-like accents, bringing to mind giant rolling sea vessels. Far away kalimba and metallic bells drift in and out like tides, yet we are constantly being pulled back to the dance floor. Of the track the band reflects, “Hydrostatic pressure is a journey into the depths of the ocean, capturing the energy from more boisterous live jams but also reflecting our home studio production sound.” Having met at music school, Birdsnake formed when after class jams became a regular occurrence. This improvised and relaxed sharing of ideas forms the basis of all of Birdsnake’s tracks, and the forthcoming album Biofilter builds on this chemistry. Aquatic in theme and sounds, the new album aims to leave listeners feeling relaxed and energised in equal measures.
