I wrote "God of Us" for my second record way back in 2003. But we ran out of money near the end of that record so I was only able to record this song with acoustic guitar - nothing else. So glad I got to give it another shot on my new album, Christmas Vol.1.

My goal in writing this song was to connect Christmas, Easter and Pentecost - to move our thinking from the manger to the cross to the world...

Originally recorded by Goo Goo Dolls, I've loved this song for years but the rock/pop feel of the original didn't fit me. And that second verse...something was missing in there.

So we rerecorded it with a tweak to the lyric in verse two for Christmas Vol. 1 and Gabe Scott (producer) did a great job giving this song a more organic feel while not totally abandoning the pop of the original.

Better Days

O Holy Night was originally written for a Catholic church in France during the Romantic era (19th Century) when Hector Berlioz and Robert Schumann were rock stars. The Christmas carol was eventually outlawed in the Catholic church in France because it wasn't "sacred" sounding enough.

I wanted to exaggerate the Romantic period feel of the song so I rearranged the tune with chord progressions made popular in that era. This made the song much more complex harmonically so we went simple with the recording - jut piano (played by Ben Shive) and my vocal at the lowest part of my range.

O Holy Night was eventually brought the U.S. during the Civil War by an abolitionist who used it as an opportunity to preach that God was against slavery and injustice. He still is. And there are still slaves and injustice today. So we keep singing.
