Up and coming artist Shavar Dawkins is embarking on the beginning of a new era. With the debut of his first, official single, Trapped we are given a glimpse of what is to come. The song's lyrics reference not wanting to be stuck anymore. Whether it's a mentality, a lifestyle, or one’s surroundings, it's a feeling we can all relate too. Shavar uses his melodic rap and an east coast inspired flow to reflect on his life. “I’m fighting the devil within, visualizing the vision before.” The lyrics in this song speak of no longer being influenced by the voices in his head, and any conversations from the past that weighed him down. Instead, he's leaving that energy where it should be, in the past and pushing forward.

Vary is a rapper and songwriter with a diverse background that spans Kingston, Jamaica, and Burlington, VT. Influenced by artists such as Kirk Franklin, Lil Wayne, Big Sean, Travis Scott, and Kendrick Lamar, Vary discovered his passion for composing music as a teenager. However, it wasn’t until the year of the pandemic that he professionally launched his lifelong craving for a hip-hop career.

Initially, Vary’s music career took a backseat to another passion that promised financial stability—his love for cameras. Despite releasing early songs online in 2014, he parked the microphone due to the prevailing belief that making a career out of rapping was unachievable. While attending Castleton University as a communication major, Vary’s off-season in music continued, filming music videos for local talents. Eventually, he made the move seeking more work opportunities.

After releasing a series of warm-up singles and navigating the challenges of 2020, Vary has returned with a renewed focus and a commitment to releasing singles with genuine intent. His standout single, “2 AM,” from his freshman mixtape Deep Waters (released on July 23rd, 2021), showcases his versatility and marks a significant progression in his musical style. In this track, the 23-year-old artist confronts the anger and frustration of feeling mislabeled, blending melodic vocals with a captivating delivery.

Following a year of personal growth and exploration, Vary’s long-awaited project, Deep Waters, is now polished and ready to make its impact. The mixtape’s opening lyrics, “I’m just trying to paint my name,” set the stage for an eight-track canvas that carries weight and exemplifies an artist determined to prove himself. Deep Waters provides a glimpse into Vary’s evolution as a young man who has grown in multifaceted ways, and it sets the tone for the motives driving his emerging career.
