8-Bit This Is Halloween

Hopeful WIP 1

I started working on this when I realized I could make the "Lost Girl" leitmotif in the Deltarune soundtrack sound like the opening measures to Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." After a barrage of GIFs of the "No Stairway" scene from Wayne's World from family and friends, I decided to take the rest of the track in a completely different direction.

I may have made it rock just a little too hard.

This track was created using soundfonts from a variety of SNES, PSX, and GBA games, including:

- Earthbound
- Mother 3
- Megaman Zero 3
- Xenogears
- Final Fantasy VI

Isn't it crazy to think that in less than a week December Holiday might actually have a canon character design?

Laura Palmer EP - Released 14th November via Believe Digital

Following on from the breakthrough success of debut single Flaws/Icarus, BASTILLE, led by South London based musician Dan Smith, present their sophomore outing, the four-track EP: Laura Palmer.

Opening with the Twin Peaks inspired eponymous song’s huge chanted chorus and pulsating drums, Smith immediately reminds us why Flaws/Icarus was such a runaway success; his music manages to garner attention-grabbing hooks while avoiding clichés and gimmickry. ‘Overjoyed’ reveals another side to Bastille; a darker more sombre but ultimately uplifting affair that sees glitch drumbeats coalesce with haunting, melancholic vocals to stirring effect. 

Meanwhile ‘Get Home’ and ‘Things We Lost in the Fire’, with it’s epic string arrangements, see Smith experimenting with his sound and pursuing new sonic avenues, the only constant being his distinctive voice and aforementioned love of melody. ‘Get Home’ in particular makes for an affecting listen as it gradually builds to the most colossal wall of vocoder harmonies since Bon Iver’s ‘Woods’.

Previous single Flaws/Icarus, which The Independent described as “an understated gem”, saw BASTILLE on the receiving end of a considerable amount of attention, the video for ‘Flaws’ garnering over 160, 000 views on YouTube and being covered by dozens of other performers. The release received great reviews from Artrocker and Time Out amongst others, and received early support from Radio 1, Xfm and 6 Music along the way. 

As a live band BASTILLE are earning a fierce reputation, aided by Smith’s versatile and unique stage presence. They have had a busy summer of festivals and sold-out headline shows, as well as supporting the likes of Foster the People and Fenech-Soler. Now with a national tour to celebrate the release of the EP lined up for the autumn, Bastille’s live show is turning into a salivatory proposition.
