Gratitude can be shown in every part of our daily life; from the food we eat, to the health and wealth that Allah has blessed us with. This two-part series explores a variety of blessings we should be grateful for, how to express gratitude and the dangers of ingratitude.

This talk begins with the connection between ingratitude and disbelief and how these are explained with examples from the Quran. Ingratitude towards other people and the origin of the word 'kufr' are explained in this context.

The talk also emphasises our many blessings, including the gift of life itself, and how well-off we are compared to many others. Gratitude is explained to be part of a healthy lifestyle also by worldly practitioners; having a positive impact on one's mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. The negative consequences of ingratitude, such as envy, are contrasted to this. 

Gratitude and patience are mentioned to be two sides of the same coin; giving the same reward which can be utilised in all the situations of a believer. In the end of the talk, guidance (hidāyah) is put forth as being the greatest gift of all.

Allāh has bestowed upon man higher intellect than any of his creation. The commentary of this sūrah draws attention to a beast that becomes totally subservient, servile and compliant to his master only because he shows a few favours towards it. Despite mans understanding, whilst being blessed with innumerable and immeasurable favours, he remains extremely ungrateful to his lord. Man is never satisfied and is forever complaining.

The insatiable greed for wealth corrupts the mind and character and leads to the disobedience of the creator. We are reminded to always prepare and think ahead for the hereafter. One should ponder and reflect on the purpose of life and remember that one will have to rise from the grave and account for his deeds before his lord. His pursuits in the world will all be terminated. 

These notions will help eradicate all ailments of the heart and make a person more grateful, satisfied and obedient to his creator.

Allah has created Man in a very unique form. He has given man intelligence and blown into him a spirit which makes him human. When Allah instructed the angels to prostrate to Adam (A.S) they were not just prostrating to his physical body, but rather the spirit within him. We all possess this soul yet it is often given little attention.

We indulge in many physical pleasures in this life, often neglecting our soul and depriving it of nourishment. Our souls are important, just as our bodies, in being sustained and satiated. If the body is created from the Earth then its nourishment comes from the Earth. Our souls are heavenly and therefore its nourishment must also be celestial and heavenly.

Find out from this talk the importance of the soul and how we can look after it, ensuring that it remains nourished with a close connection to Allah.

Tazkiyah: Nurturing the Soul

In this talk Shaykh Abdur-Rahman begins by mentioning the meaning of true companionship. Shaykh goes on to mention that for one to develop their connection with Allah Most High, their acts of devotion must have a spiritual element to them. By continuing with the dhikr, one can ensure his acts of worship do not merely become routine tasks. Shaykh further highlights the importance of attending spiritual gatherings and their benefit in rejuvenating the inner system and strengthening the heart, which is constantlyin a state fo flux. Finally, the Shaykh briefly mentions the different stages of progress in the path in which an aspirant’s connection with Allah Most High develops.
