The next edition of the Local Selection Mix series comes from Derry native Shay Whelan who pieces together a pulsating techno workout. The youngster hones in on forward-thinking minimalistic funk that pays tribute to the 90s while also carving out a space for innovative sound design and modern power.

Next up on the Local Selection Mix is a well-overdue contribution from Shay Whelan as he supplies a blistering hour of classic and grit-laced club-focussed techno. The youngster is best known for defying genre limitations, and weaving between techno, breaks, house and electro, however on this occasion is straight-up techno, no bullshit, no frills, proper order.

Shay who was born and raised in Derry, has a remarkable list of accomplishments to add to his techno CV. Over the past few months, his productions have garnered support from industry heavyweights such as Mall Grab, Kettama, and I Hate Models, amongst others. With an original style that is characterised as built for dancefloors, Shay easily captures that high-octane club sound that DJs often desire.

Shay seamlessly blends through various straightforward and dynamic loop-infused cuts. Moving through bleepy nuances into snarling forward-facing funk tools. Shay keeps his foot firmly on the pedal on this hour mix, leaving little room for water breaks, or any pauses for that matter. The Derry native’s ability to keep a constant rhythmic flow is unmatched and you can feel the wheels moving from the bellowing subs right through to the crisp skippy hats. This is music for movement.

Shay Whelan makes his debut on Märked with four groove-heavy tracks designed to shake the floor with deep, rumbling low-ends, while syncopated hats slice through, keeping the grooves locked in and razor-sharp.
With the addition of remixes by Cult and Gräfin, the package comes together in a perfect fusion of rhythm and intensity.

“San Junipero” bursts out of the gate like a horse in full stride, with the kick and percussion hitting just right. The track moves smoothly, like a rider in sync with the rhythm, steering the energy of the dance floor.
“Mueve" introduces a gritty synth stab rhythm, spiraling like a fast-turning turbine, pulling you deeper into its mechanical groove with every beat.
“The Lotus Groove” has a mechanical vibe, with gritty sweeps landing on the first and third beats, creating a grinding, textured sound.
"Kash Me" delivers yet another potent punch, with its percussion hitting at full throttle. Shay once again showcases his expertise in the art of 'call and response'. The track thrives on simplicity, letting the rhythmic dialogue take center stage.
Cult brings his signature touch to the remix of “The Lotus Groove”, layering sharp percussion with unsettling sounds that are perfectly woven into an infectious rhythm.
Gräfin’s take on “San Junipero” evokes the old-school Birmingham sound, reminiscent of Surgeon—hard, fast, and uncompromising. As Wikipedia puts it: “leaving only huge slabs of unrelentingly unchanging minimalism.”

A DJ and producer from Derry, Northern Ireland, whose work captures the raw energy and emotional depth of the underground electronic scene. Drawn to music from a young age, Shay began mixing at just 11 years old, using the soaring melodies of 90s trance as a way to express a growing obsession with sound. What began as a fascination soon evolved into a craft—shaped by years of experimenting with House, Lo-Fi, and beyond. Shay has now found his voice in the harder edges of club music, creating fierce, fast-paced tracks from a Techno realm. His sound is urgent, physical, and unapologetically his own—a reflection of both his roots and his restless drive to push things forward.
