Lars Huismann makes a quick return to SHDW & Obscure Shape’s newly minted Mutual Rytm imprint as he delivers a medley of classic, groove-driven techno productions via his ‘Sounds From The Past I’ EP. 

With recent releases via labels such as Slam’s iconic Soma, Berlin-based DJ and producer Lars Huismann is quickly growing to become a familiar name of note within today’s modern techno landscape. Having featured as one of the artists on the label’s debut V/A release in February, with the German set to feature as a regular across the imprint in coming months, he unveils fresh shades to his sound palette on his return to Mutual Rytm with a combination of six slick techno cuts across his ‘Sounds From The Past I’ EP. 

The powerful, rolling dynamics of ‘Surge’ open proceedings as Huismann quickly sets his stall, while ‘Collison’ veers into slick, looping territories as the energy and tension are kept tight and high. Next, ‘Echo’ ups the pace as tough kicks meet zipping melodies, filtered chords, and looping vocal interjections amongst a medley of flurrying percussion licks, before ‘Funk Shed’ takes cues from its title and showcases a classy blend of classic Detroit-influenced sonics guided by sweeping synths. Title cut ‘Sounds From The Past I’ brings with it flashes of serenity and peace, before erupting and spiraling effortlessly into infectious and captivating drum grooves, before closing the show via the rich yet muscular tones of final offering and digital bonus track ‘Jackin’.

SHDW is the phantom moniker of Marco Bläsi, a Stuttgart native with a penchant for racing percussions and big room sounds. 2014 saw the beginning of his long-term partnership with like-minded techno dealer Obscure Shape (Luigi Urban), with whom he co-ran the party series and label spin-off From Another Mind. Ten years later and Bläsi has set out on his own journey, building on a decade-long legacy of sounds with just himself, ‘his music, decks, and a mixer’. Following on from his previous label, he founded Mutual Rytm in 2022, an outlet and creative platform focused on putting out the type of expansive techno SHDW’s come to be known for. His signature style a blend of intelligently superimposed and shuffling basslines, blink of an eye beats that elicit movement and social bonds. Unerring prime time techno, Bläsi’s path forward is looking promising, with a surge of Mutual Rytm releases and worldwide dates, the next ten years look set to further build on what he’s achieved since he started out. We first came across STE-VI through our Telegram community, where he’s been an active member for quite some time. It quickly became clear that his passion for music and his thoughtful approach to DJing perfectly aligned with what Mutual Rytm stands for. After getting to know him through the community, we invited him to play at our Mutual Rytm label night at Basement NY in 2025. Since then, he has continued to establish himself as a regular presence within New York’s underground scene.

STE-VI has developed a distinctive, vinyl-only approach to techno, blending deep, hypnotic textures with driving grooves and emotional moments, always guided by the energy of the room rather than fixed expectations. His record bag is built around carefully selected modern pressings, complemented by timeless records that continue to inspire and serve a purpose on today’s dancefloors. The result is a sound that connects different generations of techno while remaining fresh and forward-thinking.

Berlin’s Phil Berg, one of techno’s most distinctive rising names,
debuts on Mutual Rytm with his ‘Dārin’ EP.

Known for his shadowy, immersive sound, Berg has carved out a singular position within the scene - equally respected for his high-impact DJ sets, his improvisational live performances, and a production style defined by clarity, tension, and a deeply recognisable sonic identity. While his live shows remain a vital part of his artistic DNA, often shaping the raw ideas that later evolve in the studio, his work extends far beyond the club floor, marking him out as a fully formed and increasingly essential voice in contemporary techno. That connection between stage and studio is fully realised on ‘Dārin’, where Berg delivers a darker, more driving statement for his Mutual Rytm debut, with the
title track already becoming a standout in the sets of label founder SHDW.
The title cut opens the EP with great urgency, as flaming drums and machine-gun synths are fired across the night sky, with sensuous whispers and sonar pulses adding the pull of the groove. Next, ‘Tempest’ brings big, banging hits, nailing down the kicks while rising tension appears through the backlit synths and distant bass
rumbles. ‘Tanoo’ releases the pressure with a more luminous synth line that locks you in a trance as linear drums race on, while ‘Mephisto’ keeps you on edge with twitchy motifs and a burrowing bassline that drills down deep into a moody underworld. The EP closes with ‘Destiny Bond’, which rises with undulating, tactile
lines, sleek synth smears, and a cosmic sense of travel. As digital bonus cuts, ‘Seiko’ and ‘Nyx’ bring anxiety and foreboding to the fore with two more muscular and physical deep techno hitters crafted for maximum impact.

Flug, aka Sebastian Lopez, has long been part of the fabric of underground techno with a signature sound that is deep, driving and atmospheric, ensuring that the Argentinian has crafted his own story across the globe. Following his track ‘In Control’ on Mutual Rytm’s ‘Federation Of Rytm IV’ compilation, he follows the likes of KiNK & Raredub and Deetron to make his appearance on sub-imprint, Mutual Rytm Raw, with his ‘Dew At Night’ EP featuring a rare rebuilt version of an unreleased sketch dating all the way back to 2009.

‘Dew At Night’ was unearthed while searching for another track among sessions from over a decade ago. After hearing it again, it sparked a new creative age to rebuild it from scratch, and while experimenting with synthesisers, the main arpeggio appeared. "At first it was hypnotic but harmonically repetitive; the groove and phrasing felt incredibly catchy, so I decided to push the harmony further and change some chords until I found the exact point where emotion and tension could coexist naturally.” Around that bright arp are darker, more raw percussive textures and drums that make for a great contrast and melancholic atmosphere that marries emotion with physical structure. "In my mind, the track was always conceived as a closing track - that moment when the darkness is still there, but the first light of the day starts to appear and the whole atmosphere changes.”

After hearing the original, label founder SHDW suggested the Argentinian should remix and reinterpret the record to complete the full EP, and so he steps out of his comfort zone across the remaining tracks, exploring different versions of his musical universe and showcasing all sides of his sound. First up is the ‘Dub Version’, which represents his contemporary sound - the melodic and emotional essence of the original track remains but is translated into a more hypnotic and club-oriented language. The ‘Instrumental Version’ is a brings more progressive-leaning sounds with piano, sax and live percussion textures that, says the artist, allowed him to "rediscover myself as a producer by using tools and influences gathered throughout my long journey in electronic music”. Closing the package, the digital-only ‘Raw Version’ strips away the melody and gets much more primal, introducing a tunnelling groove for when the dancefloor gets dark and moody.
