Stargirl (score)

Opoczynski originated in the Polish traditional dance genre known as oberek , which was popular at weddings and other festivities of the Polish middle class.  The lyrics of the original tune in direct translation say: “Hey, we’d dance but there’s not enough room. Let’s move the tables away, there will be enough room”.  Oberek was often played on a fiddle in a fast tempo with a characteristic rhythmic motif.  Adhering to the origins of Opoczynski, it was more than appropriate to have a fiddle play in the opening section as well as on the main melody. We decided to incorporate that rhythmic motif into the main theme of the piece and squeeze it in between the two phrases.  Following the festive message of the lyrics, we use hand clapping and other percussion instruments including the Cajun in order to capture the sound of a house party in a 19th century Polish village. This arrangement results in a unique combination of modal jazz and Polish folklore. 

Opoczynski

This Polish folk song is somewhat nostalgic, speaking of a man far away from home and thinking of his lover in Ukraine. This story is the main inspiration behind this new arrangement by Hey Sokoly. A slow ballad tempo and the tranquil atmosphere of the music help to express the sentimental mood. The original form (verse, chorus, verse, chorus, etc) is not entirely preserved in this arrangement and a listener familiar with most of the song’s existing folk versions will find newly composed musical elements here and there, as well as a re-harmonization of certain parts of the main melody. This folk song is still popular and widely performed today, usually as a fast polka.
