Feminist attitude meets disco samples!

"Mad, Bad and Dangerous to know" was a term that was originally used to describe the English poet, Lord Byron. He is remembered not only for his poetry and artistic influence but also for the scandal that surrounded him due to his lavish lifestyle and many affairs.

(It also worth mentioning that he was also the father of Ada Lovelace, who was a feminist pioneer. She sought an education for herself at a time when women were not educated, and she has been recognised as a key player in the thinking that led to the invention of the modern day computer.)

More recently though the term "Mad, Bad and Dangerous" has been used to describe women in general, especially when they are being seen as being 'difficult'. I am suggesting that you come to a not too hasty conclusion of presuming this just means 'standing up for herself'.
So from an all-female line up which includes the singer and producer, the remixers and the mastering engineer...

This song is reclaiming the phrase, 'Mad Bad and Dangerous' and pushing it out for the dance floor!

A relatively down-tempo offering from Shelectro, which is one of the unreleased songs off her debut EP.  The lyrics of this song are about finding strength and freedom once you manage to leave a situation or relationship and you can finally find yourself and make your dreams heard.

Early on, this song was featured on the New Music Brief programme on Beyond Radio and described as 'wonderful' by the DJ Julie Stacey.  It was also the opening tune at the 'If Not Now, Then When?" EP launch event.

Time To Dream Out Loud

This is the title track from Shelectro's debut EP.
This song in particular is a 'note to self' really!  Not only is it intended to be a feminist trope, encouraging others to stand up and be counted,  but it also marks the passing of time and acknowledging that far too much time has been spent not finishing and releasing music and allowing self doubt get in the way of getting music out there.  All this is going to change now..  This is the tipping point..  Because after all, if not now, then when!?

I instantly loved the original of this tune - the theme and lyrics resonated loud and clear, and I was MADE UP that Sasquin let me do this remix!  

The Shelectro remix is more uptempo and has got a disco-vibe but check out the original too.  Its epic!!

Following on from her debut EP in 2022, this is the first follow up single from Shelectro.  Her music continues to explore issues that include under representation and equality of opportunity.  This song provides a response to a saying that has emerged in the last few years of "you can't be, what you can't see".    While she accepts and is fully supportive of the fact that people need role models to look up to, in music, film and culture, to be able to see people who mirror and reflect themselves and their communities - it is also important to not rely on this for sole inspiration.  Go out there and get your own dream. Otherwise, your whole life could be spent waiting!

Get Yourself A Dream (radio Edit)

This song is about a woman who wakes up one day and takes stock of her life.  Asking herself questions like 'is this all life has to offer?' and 'how did I end up here?' she vows to claim back her power and re-engage with the life that she wants, and used to have before she got swept along with other peoples priorities, wants and demands.  
I know so many strong and powerful women who have inspired the lyrics for this song, and the release date is coinciding with International Women's Day 2023 to celebrate them all!

This song is about impostor syndrome.  As a female DJ and now music producer, I have encountered lots of covert sexism over the years, and I feel that is a contributing factor to why I put off finishing and releasing music for so long.

Despite now being more confident, impostor syndrome can creep back in at any time and sometimes in the most unexpected circumstances. I need to work hard at keeping it at bay!
