Devastating heart break Roots from one of the most unlikely encounters in Reggae history.

The story goes that producer Harry Moodie met Inge Larsen a white German Schlager (look it up or better yet don't) singer when she was on holiday in Jamaica and was brought to Moodie's studio by I Roy. The producer was enchanted by her and cut this incredible reworking of John Holt's classic. Unlike many tourist forays into Reggae this is a bonifide killer, Larsen's Nico-esque monotone perfectly suited to the mournful roots backdrop.

"Congo" by Nkrumah is a hypnotic slice of deep roots by Nkrumah aka Toronto's Kwame Salmon. The city that was home to Johnny Osbourne, Leroy Sibbles, Jackie Mittoo and countless other Reggae legends has produced another artist following this great  lineage, a singer  with a voice unlike anyone else.
Originally released in miniscule quantities as a self produced dubplate/lathe cut, the 45 caused a sensation among Djs and sound system operators world wide.  

This official release features a different mix with an extended version and a spare, mesmerizing  Dub version by Toronto's Heavy Manners crew reminiscent of late 90s/early 2000s Rhythm and Sound releases.

He set up Summer Records in the basement of his suburban home in Malton near the airport, a subterranean music sanctuary for the likes of Prince Jammys, Jackie Mittoo, Johnny Osbourne and Willi Williams.
Dreadlock Lady features Jerry's yearning falsetto over a hazy instrumental courtesy of the Ishan Band and showcasing horns-man Fitty's transcendent flute and Sax solos. The Dub enters even more surreal territory with Jerry at the controls putting the tape machine through its  paces, reminiscent of wilder outings at Wackies Studio.

 

Stay tuned for a short documentary on Jerry Brown featuring a wealthy of archive and never before seen footage Co-directed by me (Chris Flanagan) and Directed by Graeme Mathieson , produced by Lea Marin and Sherien Bharsoum at The National Film Board of Canada.
