Rockabilly  Man

Around the world there are hundreds of good songs written very day but how many of those ‘good ‘songs are hits? The best way to write a hit song is with a hit maker. Start with a call to Ross Wilson. From the monster hits Eagle Rock and Bed of Nails to John Farnham’s Touch of Paradise, Ross Wilson is a man who knows his songs. He also happens to include Lawrie and Shelley Minson on his list of friends. 

Lawrie worked with Ross in the 90’s on Jimmy Barnes enormously successful acoustic album Flesh and Wood. They have remained close friends and when Shelley was looking for a new Rockabilly single, everything fell into place. Despite suffering a bout of food poisoning at the time, Ross penned the verses and chorus of Rockabilly Man in rapid succession. With Lawrie adding some guitar licks and Shelley sketching the melody it was completed and ready for the studio.

Lawrie called on the expertise of James Gillard and Scott Hills to lay down the band track and then piano wizard Garry Steel to add his great honky tonk licks. Aleyce Simmonds very graciously contributed backing vocals and Lawrie completed the electric guitars, mixed the song and took it to Steve Newton at ENREC in Tamworth for mastering.

Rockabilly Man is a song about a girl in love with a hip Rockabilly guitar slinger. He plays in a band but she’s his girl and has got what it takes to keep him.

Bettie Bang is a tribute to the 50's Pin Up Icon Bettie Page. Shelley co-wrote the song with her husband Lawrie Minson. Bettie Bang showcases the musical talents of Ezra Lee, Ronny Rindo, James Gillard, Darryl Keighley and Lawrie Minson.

Sugar Daddy is the latest release from Tamworth’s Rockabilly Sweetheart – Shelley Minson.

Sugar Daddy is the third single from her Rockability album and is a fun song about a girl in love and swings with a smooth country groove delivered by husband Lawrie Minson’s guitar and chromatic harmonica.

Shelley’s debut album Rockability has been critically acclaimed and has enjoyed widespread radio airplay across Australia. Sugar Daddy was co-written with Tamworth songwriter John Cunliffe and produced by Lawrie Minson.

Shelley and Lawrie have had a huge 2017 with performances at the world’s largest Rockabilly festival - Viva Las Vegas, Cooly Rocks On at Coolangatta, the Gympie Music Muster and later in the year, Cruisin’ Country and the Shepparton Shakeout.

Shelley has been celebrating the release of her debut album ROCKABILITY with a launch at the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly weekend in Las Vegas and she has followed up with performances at Cooly Rocks On in Coolangatta, the Gympie Music Muster and recently Cruisin’ Country. 

The first single ROCKABILITY was a number 2 hit on Tamworth’s 88.9 Chart, took 3rd position on Australian Country Radio and made 4th spot on Australian Country Tracks.

Her music and look is inspired by the great Rockabilly artists from the fifties and her shows are upbeat with songs made for dancing. 

ROCKABILITY was produced by Shelley’s multi award winning husband and features the talents of some of the top session musicians in Australia including Scott Hills, James Gillard and Hugh Curtis. Australian Music legend Ross Wilson has been a big supporter and lent his songwriting talents to the song Rockabilly Man. 

Her duet of Frankie and Johnny with veteran entertainer Issi Dye is destined to breathe new life into the old song with here upbeat vocals and husband Lawrie’s top class production. 

Shelley is taking her music to the Shepparton Shakeout and Dance the Night Away in Perth later in 2017.

Issi Dye has enjoyed a long and successful career in Australian music dating back to the 1960’s with appearances on iconic TV shows such as Bandstand, Komotion and the GO Show.

Issi became an Aussie household name with regular performance spots on TV shows such as The Graham Kennedy Show, The Ernie Sigley Show and The Don Lane Show.

He also hosted his own late night TV show on the Nine Network from the mid 70’s until the late 90’s.

Issi is also known for his great tribute shows where he performs the songs of great artists from the past including Dean Martin, Johnny O’Keefe, Al Jolson and Bobby Darin.

Issi was introduced to Shelley Minson by a mutual friend Ray Maguire and the idea of the duet came into being. Shelley’s producer/husband Lawrie Minson suggested the old classic Frankie and Johnny and work began on the collaboration. Issi’s vocal performance is perfect for the song and Shelley adds her vocals in true Rockabilly style.

This is the first original recording Issi has done in 35 years which makes the recording historic and one for the archives!

Tamworth singer songwriter Shelley Minson launched her debut album Rockability in March this year. The album was produced by her multi Golden Guitar winning husband Lawrie Minson and was released in time for their performance at the 20th Anniversary of the Viva Las Vegas Festival, held in Las Vegas over Easter.

Rockability consists of mostly original songs and showcases the talents of some of Australia’s top session musicians and backing singers. The songs were all crafted to suit Shelley’s style and the CD package was compiled by award winning artist Glen Hannah. Rock legend Ross Wilson helped pen the song Rockabilly Man and has been a big supporter of Shelley’s career.

Lawrie has worked at the highest level of the music industry in Australia including 18 years with Lee Kernaghan’s band and has also toured and recorded with Jimmy Barnes and Slim Dusty.  

The songs on ROCKABILITY are a mix of Rockabilly, Honky Tonk & Western Swing.
