This is the story of an ancient legend that holds human culture was brought to earth by heavenly beings. The piece begins in heaven, where gods and goddesses answer a call to descend to the world and establish civilization. The stately melodies are modeled loosely after court music (yayue) of the Tang dynasty (618–907); the Tang is considered the zenith of China’s cultural history. According to ancient tradition, the striking of the gong is done to make way for a high official—in this case, the emperor.
