When Mouse, the Scottish-raised and Bristol-based 'fun-size pop angel and producer princess', released Angels Never Die in 2021, she realised she had built herself a new world. Described as "an exceptional piece of work that sets the standard of what musicians should be striving for in these current times" (Tap The Feed), the EP was a ‘dance-pop’ Bandcamp bestseller. 

Now, she’s returned with a hungrier, animalistic track of self-defiance. 

A collaboration with hyperpop and experimental producer TEEN, Swarovski shines with distorted vocals and brightly flickering synths. Taking archetypal astrological influence, this song, in both lyrics and narrative, portrays a typical Aries rising attitude: having a natural affinity with leadership and unwavering prosperity. Swarovski is a stark reminder to all of personal strength and self-respect.

Chrysalis is one of two final songs from me as an artist. It’s a bittersweet moment, but there seems to be no other way for me to be an artist anymore while I continue to show up as a character I created in 2017 when I didn’t like who I was. I don’t feel that way any more and so, after a little break to collect myself, I’ll rebrand and start again. However, YouTube has proven my favourite place on the internet. I’ll rebrand this to my real name later this month and continue sharing content around music production. 

As for Chrysalis itself, I wrote this song during the pandemic when I was watching someone I love go through something heartbreaking. I didn’t feel ready to support them as I felt so emotionally vulnerable myself. This song is a request for delicacy. I wrote these lyrics in one sitting and they’ve not changed from the way they naturally fell out of my mind in the moment. Some of the lyrics in this song are my favourites I’ve ever written, so I’m grateful it exists. I’ve never heard anyone rhyme ‘chrysalis’ and ‘limit is’ before and I think that’s really cool.

My vision for the music video for this song was to recreate Britney’s video for Sometimes on Severn Beach. I’ve still never been there.

Bones is one of two final songs from me as an artist. As for Bones itself, this song is really, really old. I forgot about it for years. The original arrangement was written with my friend, Tom (otherwise known as Anki). Since then, I’ve redeveloped it and shaped it into what it is now. I wrote it while I was still at university, lost and at my whit’s end with not feeling seen by those I desperately wanted to notice me. I suppose that’s what being an artist has felt like, in some senses. I recognise my patterns of staying stuck in a situation not serving me and by releasing this song, I release the desire for that stagnation.

I still feel sad when I listen to this song. I think it’s because although my reasons have changed, the lyrics feel as relevant as they did back then. But I know I won’t always feel that way and one day, I won’t remember why I felt like that at all.

Taking her name from her an introverted nature and stature she was once ashamed of, Mouse came into being after she took her singing teacher’s advice (Daniel Tompkins of progressive metal band TesseracT) and began posting cover videos online. After featuring on Anki’s single and second album opener ‘Our Escape’ a few months later in Summer of 2018 (which featured in Michael Kors' 'Coast to Coast' campaign), the Bristol-based-Scottish-raised singer quickly became embedded amongst the burgeoning left-field electronic scene in Bristol, playing her first show at Illegal Data. The show was recently featured in Boiler Room and British Council's documentary 'Keep Bristol Weird'.

BBC Wiltshire - "She's worth looking out for, isn't she? Big, big career ahead of her."

Keen to assert herself on record and flex her production muscles, Mouse released debut single ‘3 Weeks’ late 2018 which received global press coverage and radio play. Second single ‘Escape’ was BBC Upload and BBC Introducing in The West’s Track of The Week shortly after release and Mouse was subsequently invited for a BBC Introducing live session.

Mouse has been careful to curate her live appearances; a support slot with Dua Lipa was followed by playing Colston Hall's 'Bristol Takeover' and then the headline slot at Rough Trade Bristol for Dot to Dot 2019.

“My battle with my mental health had lasted for as long as I could remember and I came close to losing it on a few occasions. I was told that full recovery from my conditions was impossible and instead, I’d learn to live with them. I wasn’t convinced that this was true. ‘Grow’ was written after I left one of my final therapy sessions, in which I felt a sudden euphoria. I told my counsellor it was like I was finally seeing everything in HD.  This song is a celebration of that exact moment and the tenacity it took to get there."

This is my favourite song on the EP and I can’t wait to play this live, whenever that’s allowed to happen. I just can’t listen to this track sitting still which was pretty much my only goal with it. 
The first song Mun Sing and I worked together on was ‘Heavy Crown’ and I adored how he turned it into something completely different to how I’d imagined it. I love producing for myself so much that I’ll only really collaborate with someone on production if I feel they bring something that I couldn’t do myself. 
I wrote this song when reminiscing about a relationship I had at university which wasn’t particularly satisfying. The other person was overconfident throughout and no one at the time had told them their confidence was misplaced. It’s definitely a tongue-in-cheek look at that period of my life and I learned a lot about myself. 
My favourite part of this song is the beat which is why I added the outro. ‘Pity Sex’ is also the only song to be featured in ‘Finale’ as it represents my healing from sexual trauma. It’s followed by the pre-chorus melody of previous single ‘Escape’ because it reminds me that no matter what happens in my life, music will always be there for me to fall into.

The EP originally opened with a spoken-word piece over a simple beat. I love writing poetry, my poems often turn into my songs, but would love to learn to perform poetry, but it didn’t feel authentic enough to me musically.
Writing the overture was surprisingly challenging. I thought it would be an easy option; all the melodies were already written and I just needed to pick my favourite from each song. However, each track is in a different key and tempo. Modulating sections of each track to fit together was difficult but so rewarding. Because of this, the overture and the finale are my favourites parts of this EP. 
The hardest part was mixing it. I’d never mixed anything orchestral before; I didn’t seem as straightforward as mixing a traditional pop track where I’d usually begin with the drums and work my way through bass, pads, leads and so on. I made the decision to mix it as though the audience is looking at the orchestra, as though they’re standing in the conductor’s podium. Whenever I listen to it, I feel enveloped in the sound and transported. Ultimately, transportation is what this having these opening and closing tracks are about. They’re written for those who want to listen in their headphones, alone, to escape the world… which I suppose is what I didn’t realise I needed this year. I believe music should take you somewhere else. Also, who has an overture on an EP?!

This song had so many forms before working on it with Mun Sing. This is the first song we ever did together so it feels really special to me. His instrumentation is just so inventive and it feels completely different to anything else on the EP to me, even from ‘Pity Sex’ which we also did together. 
Although it might sound like a breakup song, I wrote this and ‘Unladylike’ about the same person. The way I was treated in that situation opened a lot of people’s eyes so I was the catalyst for major changes in their environment. The instrumentation is so tense which is perfect for how I felt when I wrote it… before, this song existed as an EDM track and acoustically… nothing compares to this version and I’m so grateful Mun Sing got it there.

This song opens with a recording of a phone call between a friend and I. Originally, it started with a sample from Mean Girls, when Regina gets hit by the bus. To avoid being sued, I needed to replace it with something original. I love how this song starts because it resembles many conversations had between my friends and I, discussing how hard it is to start and maintain businesses during a pandemic. 
I wrote the lyrics for this song a few years ago, after an old boss walked past me in Bristol. I was let go suddenly from a job which promised me the world in a really disrespectful way. It was probably my first experience of someone being just plain nasty in a professional environment. Heavy Crown is also about this person. 
However, this song is a commentary on feminism. Women are given a set of rules to live by with the expectation that they won’t speak up if they aren’t happy with something. My solace in this situation was knowing that I wouldn’t need to be the one to fight back, karma will work in my favour anyway. 
The production for this song felt really easy to me. I started with a Mellotron, which I never do, because I didn’t realise Logic had one. It was the first and probably last time I’ll use it! At times, the beat feels pretty hectic, like it’s getting ahead of itself. I think that speaks volumes about anger as an emotion; it can be so hard to reign in. Even though women are taught to! 
This song also contains my favourite vocal performances on the EP, moments where I listen to it and can’t believe it’s me that sounds like that.

I wrote this song when I was feeling the lowest I’d felt in a long time. I opened my lyric book and let my pen lead and these lines fell out like it was what a higher guidance needed me to hear and know. The only lyrics that aren’t from that original twenty minutes of scrawling is the middle eight, which I found inspiration from in Rebecca Campbell’s ‘Rise Sister Rise’. Campbell is a modern-day High Priestess and her book is an extended invitation for women to rise and step into their authentic selves. Although I knew the message this section should convey, I struggled to find the words. I picked keywords from a page in her book and the section came instantly. 
I produced this song the day after I was made redundant due to Coronavirus. I’ve never had a production experience like it as it came together so quickly and naturally. Similarly to the lyrical content, it was like the melody and chords were what my soul needed to hear too. 
This song was so fun to produce. I wanted to create a feeling of unity and calling an army so started with the snare roll sample and built the beat from there. Orchestral music has been hugely important to my musical journey so far and my only goal with my EP was to make something completely authentic to me, without caring about the popularity of particular sounds. I knew I wanted this track to sound cinematic and dramatic and those feelings are emanated by brass. When composing classically, I usually begin with cello, as the most versatile string instrument, or the french horn, which is my favourite orchestral instrument. Combining these orchestral sounds with samples that would fall under the umbrella of PC Music made it sound really original. One of my favourite sections is the second half of the middle eight where the choir comes in. 
Whenever I listen to this song, I feel inspired, lifted and ready to rise. I hope it does the same for other people.
