Bet That by Shid Latta review by Alex Faulkner (The Faulkner Review)


Shid Latta is a hip-hop artist hailing from Baltimore and rap is clearly in his blood as he has been rapping since the tender age of six. He hit the rap scene with the Heath Ledger Chronicles albums, which came out across two volumes. His latest single Bet That is certainly the work of a master at his craft. It was produced with an expert hand by Sibling Jointz and you can hear the influence of his rap heroes Jay-Z, Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg in his music.

Bet That begins with a swirling melodic pattern that grabs your attention, before a raw four-note synth riff kicks in, which becomes a hook in itself. Shid hints at the vocal hook of the chorus before the beat enters and we hear the catchy refrain for the first time 'You can bet that s---". It was a smart move by Shid to start with the chorus.

The lyrics are instantly entertaining, Shid's self-belief clear from the outset with the bold lines 'Bar for bar I am da best, just go ask the internet' and 'Think my skill worth a bill'. Fortunately, Shid certainly does have the skill and so it's not just a case of bravado. It's one thing to talk the talk, but Shid can most certainly walk the walk. 

After the second chorus, verse two offers some more of Shid's command of flowing rhyme with lines like 'People tryin to seal my fate, call my lawyer, charge, destroy, paranoia will destroy ya'.  The particular influence of Snoop Dogg can especially be heard in the lines 'I'm blasting off to outer space, blowing like a powder keg, a cloud of smoke cover my face'. 

Like that rap legend, Shid has a very smooth delivery style in his rapping, but while he shares the need to entertain with his flowing rhymes, he has a sound of his own. Special mention must also go to the beat and the ultra-funky rapid fire hi-hats on the chorus. The mix is just right, with the vocals taking centre stage as they should.

For a track to be a hit on radio though, while smart and funny lyrics do help, it comes down to the catchiness of the chorus hook, and that's where Bet That really excels. A lot of folks will be able to relate to the first two lines 'They got my back against the wall, keep my head high standing tall'. After only a few listens, I found myself humming it and I could imagine a huge crowd chanting along with Shid when he gets to drop this song live. 

Overall, this is a very strong cut and when radio gets hold of it, we will no doubt be hearing it all over the airwaves this summer. I think you'll be getting to know a lot more about Shid Latta in the near future, and this could well be his breakthrough track to the big time. The Faulkner Verdict: Hit.

The album is titled LOVE+OTHERx DRUG$ and is all about love, the loss of that love, trying to cope with that loss, as well as many other things going on in his life. His motto is all about being real and about expressing his own emotions in his music. So, naturally, all of the 30 tracks on his album are all about real events from his life
