Dumpling Soup for the Soul (2nd serv)

i found this flower in my backyard
i made this mix so my friends and i would have something to listen to on the car ride to edc lv.


Back in May 2023 I finished recording this mix but didn't have an album cover to go with it. So I stepped outside to my backyard to get some fresh air and I saw this flower in a rosebush my mom had been growing in our backyard. Right then, I ran back upstairs to get my camera and took a few pictures of the flowers on the rosebush.

Before this, I hadn't dropped a mix in 2 years and it was the last of what I now refer to as the "ratchet trilogy".

Writing this now, almost a full year later, I think a part of me truly wanted to change how I approached my craft as a DJ. So much had changed in those 2 years and one of those things was a new hobby: photography.

Since then, I've been making a ton of DJ mixes, but I've been holding onto them until I found the right flower & feeling to go along with them.

i made this mix for my college best friend’s first day party

This past July 2023, I had the opportunity to catch up with my dear friend DJ T-Swift by flying to Chicago and spinning the opening slot of his first ever day party. 

This was the first time I DJ'd in another state, it was my first time mixing on moving platter turntables, and my boy Tyler gave me specific directions regarding my curation: R&B/Hip-hop, summer vibes, nothing TOO HEAVY, and easy on the ratchetness.

This assignment was one of the most difficult I've had in years and I was quickly humbled through my struggle. I wasn't even fully ready by the time the gig came around and although I didn't trainwreck my set, it absolutely was lacking.

In the two months since my visit to Chicago, I really lingered on this set and did a deep dive on afrobeats, up-tempo R&B, and funk as I felt it was probably time I pushed outside my comfort zone again and really try to live up to my self-proclaimed, "Open Format" label.

I still wouldn't consider myself an expert in whatever genre this mix would be called, but I'm really happy with what I've made. It reflects the many significant changes I've been going through in my personal & professional life and it really encompasses the summer vibe as I felt it personally. I hope you had a good summer in 2023 and I hope this mix captures that memory of this season for you too. But if it didn't, then I hope by the time the flower of this album cover blooms again, your life will have changed for the better.

i made this mix for a euphoria-themed party, kinda

This mix was ready to go a long time ago, but given my self-imposed condition that I pair my mixes with a flower I took a picture of, I sat on it for a while.

While I was preparing for a party I was hosting, my friends who helped me plan and run the party decided on a dress code theme: Euphoria (the HBO show).

I decided, on my own, to start working on a euphoric-mood playlist but my friends requested a completely different genre of music that I was already well practiced in, so I put the EDM playlist aside for something a little more ratchet. They didn't know I was even preparing a playlist at that point and I'm glad they gave me the right direction because that party ended up being really fun :)

After that party, I came back to this playlist and started playing around with it. Something about the songs I picked and how quickly I picked them out resonated with me. It felt so natural and easy and before I knew it, I had a pretty solid euphoric house mix.

In the time since, I've played parts of it out a few times at private parties to fill in the time and I've used it as a teaching set for my friends who recently started learning how to DJ. 

This mix sustained me through lots of long drives and really brings me back to the days when I was still learning. It’s a return to form and I felt it was fitting to finish out my late bloom series.

"gük" means "soup" in Korean and so taking a cue from the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" book series, I've decided to craft several mixes to follow different themes.

This mix is an extended & cleaned up version of a set I played for the Asian Creative Network (ACN) Los Angeles mixer back in December 2018. It's a dedication & tribute to Asian artists & influences in today's music in a collection sang, written, and/or produced by Asian artists. Along with these songs are also tracks I felt transitioned really well to bridge the gaps between genres or fit the vibe to reflect the Asian-American spirit (obviously Porter is an honorary Asian xD).

Back to some housey vibes, this mix is my b2b set with my good friend & protégé @dumplin_g for the online music festival NO FOMO last month.

My darkboi and I go b2b pretty frequently and always have a great synergy (dumplings go great with soup, amiright) so I decided it was a bit overdue to show my followers what we got. Hope you enjoy!
