MUSHROOMS PROJECT – DIRTY BOLAS/SUNSET BALLAD

Three years on from the release of the critically acclaimed debut album, Undergrass, Mushrooms Project return to Leng with a two-track taster for their forthcoming follow-up full-length.

In the intervening years, Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano have hardly been slacking, further exploring their unique blend of glistening Balearica, dubbed-out disco, Italian Afro-cosmic and psychedelic nu-disco via EPs for Horn Wax, Uber and Hell Yeah! Recordings.

Their latest two-track missive is undoubtedly amongst the Italian duo’s strongest work to date. The A-side boasts “Dirty Bolas”, an effortlessly summery groover destined to soundtrack sultry evenings and sun-baked afternoons. Its’ rolling, percussive funk groove and undulating electric bassline keep the action moving, but it’s the tumbling guitar solos, toasty keys, humid electronics and atmospheric field recordings that catch the ear.

Flip the 12” for “Sunset Ballad”, a near ten-minute epic that more than lives up to its’ name. Soft, delay-laden acoustic guitar passages and yearning electric piano flourishes set the tone, before the Parma-based production duo gradually up the pressure via a shuffling groove, whispering acid lines and quietly bubbling synthesizers. It’s undeniably rich and life affirming, but best appreciated while lying flat on your back.

Dirty Bolas will be featured on the duo’s second album 'Rivea Corymbosa', which is slated for release in the final quarter of 2016. For now, you’ll have to make do with these two slices of seductive, sun-bright brilliance.

"Obeah Woman" is one of the standout cuts on Nina Simone's classic 1974 album It Is Finished which is today considered one of her finest, particularly by diggers, Djs and producers. A dark, tribal, elemental yet celebratory field chant. Originally written by Exuma aka Tony Mckay, it possesses powers and potential that are very inspiring and we can hear, feel and experience those powers of inspiration in Nickodemus' incredible new reworking and its two remixes by Kiko Navarro and Buscrates. New Orleans' Cole Williams does the vocal honors and she manages to honor Nina by channeling her urgency without aping her sound or style, instead putting her own contemporary stamp on it. 

The main mix has a simultaneous mix of funky elegance and existential tension derived primarily from Cole's vocals which seem to cry out in the night. Kiko Navarro's mix ups the tempo and the tension by moving the song into Afrobeat/house territory and emphasizing the cultural roots of what the song's lyrics were always about to begin with, even as it transforms into a thoroughly contemporary dancefloor scorcher. Buscrates takes a different approach altogether by effortlessly placing the song at the nexus of 80s R&B and 90s Acid Jazz, creating a slice of vintage-synth downtempo heaven that conjures images of a nighttime city skyline and of the different things that happen within it on any given night...be they good or not-so-good. Turntables on the Hudson is confident that we have treated such sacred territory with the respect and reverence it's due while at the same time honoring the questing spirit that characterizes Nina Simone's work.

Now it's finally here: The debut album «Time To Recover» by Feiertag.

The Multi-faceted artist & producer has established himself as a leading name within the electronic music sphere since making his debut in 2015. He defies convention in ways many cannot, from his immersive productions on Last Night On Earth, Boogie Angst and Kitsune, to his work as a professional drummer alongside Kraak & Smaak at live events including ADE, Down The Rabbit Hole and Pitch Festival.

After two successful EPs and even more singles, Feiertag took his time for this debut album. This can be heard on each of the sixteen tracks: Extraordinary attention to detail, sophisticated arrangements and a sound aesthetic that couldn't sound more modern are probably the first impressions you take away from «Time To Recover». On second or third listen through, however, you realize that almost every one of these songs has hit potential somehow.

After the dubby head-nodding opener «Stranger To One» follows «Yearn» with Oli Hannaford from London and Tessa Rose Jackson from Amsterdam, revealing a melancholic and shimmering musical soundscape. Majestic vocals combine with lush percussive elements and smooth drums, whilst rich chords work atop of resonant strings. A song destined for eternity!

Tessa is also featured on «Follow» and «Riptide». Then there's the collaboration with GOSTO, «Stronger,» a song that gains in punch and impact with each successive listen. And with every rewind, you turn up the volume a little more. As loud as enough that you can also enjoy «It's Alright» with James Alexander Bright in its full glory and exuberant optimism. Similarly good-humored is the instrumental «Saccharine» tasting full of sweet summer, unbridled exuberance and outdoor parties. With «Panorama» Feiertag shows his calmer, more ambient side towards the end of the album to finally set an absolutely dignified closing point together with Pete Josef on «Where Are We Now».

«Time To Recover» is an almost furious ride through current musical styles and genres - all from the artful and almost grandiose orchestrated point of view of Feiertag.

Shiny Objects is the founder of San Francisco’s Strange Attraction Records, Om Records, Smoke n' Mirrors, Up All Night, Monarch & The Great Northern. A seasoned purveyor of deep grooves, he’s produced and released over 100 tracks and remixes under the Shiny Objects moniker and other aliases. As a DJ, Chris has shared his sound across dance floors in mysterious lands such as San Francisco, Black Rock City, Tulum, Ibiza, Dubai, Tokyo and Belden for over 20 years. Also a core member of the Burning Man camp Disco Knights, this Shiny guy is no stranger to bringing deep psychedelic vibes to the playa. When he’s not bringing the funk, Mr. Objects is hard at work running the Om label and getting shit done in his role as founder at SF’s Monarch nightclub and Up All Night.
