Deep Sound Channel is starting 2014 with the multi-talented producer Dasha Rush. As ashen night turns to charcoal the dawn sun burns through the mist. “Ocean Shy” melts away the sinister echoes, eroding the darkness with an amber Ambient light. 303 swirls fade and rise against a broad and beautiful soundscape, pin pricks of toms dappling the vista. The clouds loom and the night approaches as “Ocean Sharp”, a precise and powerful work, breaks. Complex patterns draw the listener in, Rush building the energy with acidified bars and bubbling basslines. Leaden streaks fold with piercing percussion for a post-midnight journey below.  A piece of 90s inspired radiance.

Mike Parker is a heavy hitting Techno artist. The New Yorker pulls no punches, just delivers them in the form of powerful percussion and hypnotic harmonies. With two decades of experience behind him "Modulation Cave" was always going to be something special. The two tracker is born in the collapsing pressure of “Modulation Cave 1.” Bleary eyed bass bubbles and boils in this heated piece of late night Techno debauchery. Melodies creep while a battery of beats disintegrates nerve endings. The flip is occupied by the twin, “Modulation Cave 2.” The brother in arms is a calmer affair, but that cyclical tension is ever present. The steady percussion of the original is maintained with harmonies being sent beaming into space. Radio waves bounce from above, liquefied electricity leaking through to the world below. Mike Parker - Modulation Cave [Snippet DSC005]

It is a privilege to welcome Ed Upton back to Shipwrec for his sixth release with the label. An artist who has been at the forefront of electronic music for three decades, under his well-honed DMX Krew guise the British musician has crafted icy electro, thoughtful electronica and textured techno. It is a combination of these styles that culminate in Tree in Space. A steady kick tethers “Parasite” to reality, a thick earthen melody countered by twinkling refrains as soaked drums splash. Off-centre bleep and beats introduce the title piece. Solid basslines are lightened by playful brassy electrofunk notes as genre limitations melt into Summer warmth. Skeletal scales find themselves confronted by a bruising bulwark of bass in “Unbelief.” Balancing these angular and globular tones are arcing keys that draw the disparate elements into unity. “Meltdown” is the closer. Blending a spread of sounds, acid, braindance and techno, DMX Krew serves up something truly special. Brooding notes are met by cracked percussion and simmering 303 squawk in a track that pursues its own path. An EP from a musician that continues to stretch boundaries and imaginations.

Next up on Shipwrec is Umwelt, an accomplished electronic musician who used to release on New York electro label Satamile as well as the likes of Kommando 6, and his own labels New Flesh and Fundata. Hailing from Lyon in France, the artwork with this release comes from fellow Lyon artist Timothée Mathelin. 
Active in the scene since the nineties, Umwelt has released a three LPs and a high and consistently excellent number of EPs that explore everything from experimental ambient to tough techno via emotive electro. This new EP deals mainly in moody electro that is tinged with nice acid lines, which slowly becomes a trait of this great label.
'Somatogravic Illusion' goes first and is a synapse-twitching bit of bulky electro with tough kicks, groaning synths and starry melodies. 'Subterranean Bases' is a little more stripped back, with sheet metal snares blowing in the wind and background pads adding a sense of drama. 'A Tale Of Disruptive Science' gets all liquid and frenzied like a prime era Drexciyan cut, with lashings of acid flashing about in the deep chambers of the track, 'Realm Of Chaos' explores slow, dragging ambiance that is pregnant with sense of end of the world doom and finally 'Terraformation' picks up the ante with pixelated melodies, urgent drums and lots of slapping percussion and gurgling acid 303s that really make you want to move. Like everything on Shipwrec, this is authentic electronic music with a very real personality of its own.

By now Dutch label Shipwrec has well and truly established itself as a go-to outlet for excellent modern electro. As such, it makes perfect sense that their next release – a special one-sided pressing - is from revered electro specialist Anthony Rother. It sees the man offer up some pure dancefloor fire that is part techno, part electro, but wholly awesome. What’s more, the blank b-side of this extra boutique 180g vinyl will be silkscreen printed and will come in a special sleeve. It will be a limited run, with no represses, and is the start of a new series of such releases from Shipwrec. 
The track, entitled 'Balkonien', is a broody affair from the off, with a supple, rubbery bed of kicks down low and a molten synth line up top. As things unfold, a nebulous network of celestial pads spiral about, the drums bounce more and lots of sinewy machine lines dance about and have you doing the same. It’s an instant modern classic full of electronic soul, frankly!

It's not often that a music producer has such a convincing approach and perspective on sound. Inofaith searches carefully for his own sound, and takes on the experiment with his debut 12'' ‘Dawn Is Late’ released on the Dutch Shipwrec label. 

This EP features the tracks ‘Dawn Is Late’: a very orchestral, deep piece with a very welcome 2-Step kind of beat. It follows up with ‘Girls Go To Bed Early’: which illuminates a more synthetic depth of the release. The subtle resonance on the synths brings the track alive. The other side of the record starts with the enchanting, yet uplifting ‘Twelve Hours’. You realise you are getting caught in the music when the feminine voice kicks in and lets you drift in circular patterns. The final track is called ‘Nocturne’: calm as the title may seem, it's the most energetic and glowing track of the EP. Inspired by the atmosphere of dusk on a spring evening, it closes the EP with some cinematic movements.

Cliche Morph delves into the clinical side of his palette and emerges with the stunning “Placebo.” Balancing alienated and arctic blasts with a thawing warmth, the outcome is pure classic electro. A rising star of machine music follows, Fleck E.S.C. A dirty bassline is further sullied by layers of gritty distortion and glitched vocals in this re-wired work of ghetto. A legend of electronics closes, Kirill Junolainen. Under his lauded Konerytmi moniker, this synthesiser shapeshifter delivers “Kuva Alkio.” Stuttering bass and tight drums are the foundation from which sci-fi inspirations take hold, sailing strings tethered by a terse snare as SES2 is brought to a triumphal close.

This debut release is a collaboration between two renowned Dutch labels, Zodiak Commune Records and Shipwrec, both with decades of rich history. This collaboration fused experimental electronics driven by Roland's TB 303's with IDM, electro, and jungle influences, aiming to provide thought-provoking music for both the dance floor and relaxed listening amid today's oversaturated dance music scene. "Enter the Ghost Ship", is the work of G303, a Zodiak Commune resident producer, stepping out of his hard acid comfort zone to explore a more emotional, dystopian, and sophisticated sound.

From the warbling bass and tight percussion of “The Resetter”, crystalline chords cascade before a shimmering string of wintery warmth. Terse beats introduce “Building Peaks”, wraith-like rinses offering space for playful forms to take hold. Fudgey basslines are unsettled by sci-fi synths, a touch of the otherworldly balancing this unique cut. The warm current of “Lizardous” penetrates the frostier funk of the EP, delicate and fragile notes thawing the cold rhythms and glacial undertones. “Silver Girl” contrasts autumnal shades with brittle harmonies, angles and lines curved by sheer musical craftsmanship. DMX Krew returns to Shipwrec for a brand new album, a collection that displays yet another side of this sculptor’s sound. Brutal and cold, shadows are long and shades dark from the outset. Drum patterns twist in tempo and intent, from hard and punishing to gentle and fragile. Elements of breaks and industrial are also present in the percussion, this fragmenting allowing deep and soulful melodies to counter the battery. In fact, echoes of electronica permeate the harmonies across the LP such as deep and divergent “Interrupt.” No single style is adhered to. Instead, the full palette of machine music is employed. From the squelchy Tudor electrofunk of “I Wonder Why” to the melancholic braindance of “Rephlections in Time”, genre boundaries are given little credence. Instead, Ed DMX draws on his decades of experience to create sounds that are both familiar and completely one of a kind. The deep-sea dive of “Final Comedown” is juxtaposed with the ambling calypso of “Dinosaur Reaction”, styles reimagined and reshaped to the creator’s evolving purpose. Echoes of the halcyon days of Rephlex permeate the 2LP. The harshness and softness of the Cornwall imprint being present throughout, those more subtle tones coming to the fore in the delicate beauty of the “Phaser Level 2.” A transcendent album and a certified future classic.
To accompany this very special release, there will be a limited edition run with full cover art by Ruwedata. An artist very close to Shipwrec’s heart, Ruwedata was responsible for the sleeve work on DMX Krew’s Cosmic Awakening.

Ed DMX has been part of Shipwrec since the label’s inception. Under his DMX Krew moniker, this analogue wizard has released four Eps and one LP on the Nijmegen imprint. DMX Krew returns to Shipwrec for a brand new album, a collection that displays yet another side of this sculptor’s sound. Brutal and cold, shadows are long and shades dark from the outset. Drum patterns twist in tempo and intent, from hard and punishing to gentle and fragile. Elements of breaks and industrial are also present in the percussion, this fragmenting allowing deep and soulful melodies to counter the battery. In fact, echoes of electronica permeate the harmonies across the LP such as deep and divergent “Interrupt.” No single style is adhered to. Instead, the full palette of machine music is employed. From the squelchy Tudor electrofunk of “I Wonder Why” to the melancholic braindance of “Rephlections in Time”, genre boundaries are given little credence. Instead, Ed DMX draws on his decades of experience to create sounds that are both familiar and completely one of a kind. The deep-sea dive of “Final Comedown” is juxtaposed with the ambling calypso of “Dinosaur Reaction”, styles reimagined and reshaped to the creator’s evolving purpose. Echoes of the halcyon days of Rephlex permeate the 2LP. 2015 looks to be Delta Funktionen’s year. Following the terrifically dark and deep Wasteland series comes "A New Planet". Cruel acid chords and mean percussion piercing through the fog. "A New Planet" is of that same sinister ilk. A cold electro beat is the bedrock from which a corrupting and corrosive 303 coil grows. But even with this caustic foundation, moments of salvation are to be found. A second techno moon dawns midway, frostier percussion giving way to warmer rhythms. Full and flowing bars fall and rise behind the squawk, allowing a new and brighter element to bloom. A track that is at once atmospheric and club centric from an artist at the top of his game.

This will be released as a single sided 12" vinyl with a silkscreen print on the B side.

Delta Funktionen - A New Planet [snippets SSPS2]

Shipwrec rolls out its new remix series with a serious slab of electro red meat. The main course is served by a machine music master, Umwelt. And what else would the serving be but the rawest of electro, coarsened by surging acid and slicing snares. Accompanying the original are a triumvirate of talent. Ekman is first, ratcheting up those sticky 303 lines whilst adding his own mischief and menace for a mind-bending mix.  The Exaltics stokes the furnaces. Brimstone and bile are churned before subtle layers give some resemblance of relief. Eomac arrives to bring some cooling to the flames. A brittle and brilliant remake is delivered, the Irishman dissolving genres to create an enigmatic end to a fiery EP.

It’s fair to say that Boris Bunnik has made an impact in his short career. In less than a decade this dutch man, under monikers like Conforce and Versalife, has scaled Electro and Techno with subtle ambient touches and IDM echoes. And that’s exactly what he’s doing for the Singularity EP. Lush pads and flowing bars punctuated by crisp percussion, “Shine Eye” sets the scene. “Autobots” adopts those same brittle beats, this time using them to send dreaming strings skyward. Northern winds swirl around the colder chords of “MILnet”, chords that dawn into absorbing swirls of “Transgenics.” Masterful machine music.

Fedbymachines has been active for almost a decade now, lurking in the undercurrents of netlabels and digital releases. Now Shipwrec shine the vinyl light of this shapeshifting musician, an artist who has ably turned his hand to a dizzying spread of styles. This skill is amply shown on his first wax release, Relapse EP, where a glut of genres are fed into the machine. Ambient. Electronica. Techno. Electro. All are combined to create a textured sound, one of delicate strings, ghostly clicks and static. Ochre closes the quintet with a remix, one that amplifies the organic nature of this absorbing encounter.

Boris Bunnik is no stranger here at Shipwrec, having graced the label with some beautifully deep and textured music under his Conforce, Hexagon and Versalife monikers.  It is to his Versalife guise that the Rotterdam based producer returns, this time for a quartet of works in the shape of Vortices. The cranking clank and grunt of the factory introduces “Amber Molecular Profile”, a piece that combines the warmth of electronica with the chill of electro. The distant tones of “Adept” follow. Carved in the void of space, Bunnik moulds glimmering notes and distant echo into a track that is both absorbing and stark. Acid reverberations and rasping rhythms give rise to sweet and sailing synthlines in the celestial title piece before a cold wind sweeps through in the shapeshifting form of “Chimaera.” A spectrum of musical radiance from a modern day master.

Versalife - Vortices EP - SHIP057

Ekman is no stranger to Shipwrec. With three EPs and an album, the dutchman’s brand of fire and brimstone has seared a serious impression on the Nijmegen imprint. The fourth 12” comes with a marked difference. That burning smouldering intensity that has characterised the acid soaked electro and stained techno of past records is present, however it is now sheathed. Beats are still sharp edged, as in “Verdraaide Logica”, yet keys have softened and taken on an introspection. “Kronkel” is cast in a similar mould. From a fearsome kick blooms an incredibly layered and thoughtful track where melodies bob and weave while rhythms rail. Even amidst the sinister sidling synthlines of “Anker Punten”, with its piercing and punishing percussion, there are understated pads to mellow. The glass and steel of “Vast” ends the EP. Angular lines permeate the piece, reflection and refractions arc and bend in this science fiction finale. Depth mixed devilment from start to finish.

2020 was a year like no other. Thankfully, Shipwrec is slowly returning to normality. Not only is the label back to releasing form, but also the roster of artists is being expanded with the superb addition of Caron. Known for his releases on labels like 030303 and Brokntoys, Caron debuts on Shipwrec with a four tracker of sheer quality. Off-kilter percussion introduces the breathy pads and grandeur of “Ancestry,” a piece of dreamy chords and acid undertones. The haunting “Common Sense” follows. Drums stagger next spectral vocals in this chilling electro piece. A similar stalking note continues on the flip with the 303 soaked “Lost.” A steady kick offers a bedrock from which looming keys, bitter squawk and dancefloor paranoia take hold. Hopeful shades arrive with the brilliance of “Ruins.” From industrial percussion and metallic rinses, a deep and intricate finale forms to bring "Shattered" to a terrific close.
