Here's my Crisis Folk Demo EP. Apart from 'Elk Woord Een Vonk' all songs are in English and quite self-explanatory. The last song is  inspired by the work and poems/prose of No Borders activist Joke Kaviaar. Crow's Nest is originally by The Battenkill Ramblers, who are amazing!

Very rough version of a new song that I wanted to just share with a few friends until I got a better recording and practiced some more, because I don't play piano but it's not a guitar song. I realized that this is how it is meant to be though. Sloppy and dark and raw and sad and mad. I spent 5 years writing it. It's about messy messy things. All my love to the families and friends of the murdered and the many people fighting everyday for Black Lives and to end police brutality.

We have a first on The Rebel Beat this month! I interviewed a visual artist for the first time - usually I just interview musicians. But we’re going to be hearing from Sundus Abdul Hadi, a brilliant Iraqi-Canadian artist based in Montreal, and member of We Are the Medium, an amazing platform and collective of multi-media artists of colour. We talked about everything from the urgency of our times, to art, to self-care. That’s coming up soon.

On the show, we also bring you some Firebrand Records news, and bring you an exclusive new track from Ryan Harvey, Kareem Samara, and Shireen! The tune is a hauntingly powerful homage to the Egyptian revolution.

And finally, in our Turn It Up segment, we look at the Tribe Called Quest performance at the Grammy Awards, where busted through a border wall with Busta Rhymes in defiance of the Trump Muslim Ban.

"I made up the name 'Crisis Folk' to give a name to the type of songs that I like to sing. Many crises manifest themselves in the traditional folk-songs that I like to borrow, like excessive drinking, poverty and violence.
Alongside these songs, I sing about other, more contemporary crises. About Europe becoming more and more like a fortress with the ever increasing border controls and violent repression of the 'sans-papiers' and 'no border' activists. Or the damage that is done to ecosystems in search of profit. Of course these are love songs too. As you cannot fight without loving.
Lately I have been playing my music on the streets of many different countries on my slow travels back to Europe from South East Asia, making up a few new songs on the way."
