To celebrate the release of his album Boarding House Reach in March 2018, Jack White embarked on a mini-tour of intimate venues. Starting at his hometown go-to stage in the Blue Room at Third Man Records in Nashville, filtering through dreams and dives in NYC and Los Angeles and London and eventually hitting White’s home away from home at Third Man Records Cass Corridor in Detroit, the performances were explosive and commanding.

In the spirit of the classic baseball “home-and-away” Vault package #37 highlights the momentous, tour-de-force set White unfurled in Nashville on March 16th and augments it with the unhinged Detroit performance a month later. Highlights include the raucous live debut of stadium anthem “Battle Cry,” the frenetic, stinging guitar fight of “Over and Over and Over” and masterful crowd singalongs for White Stripes classics like “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground.” As is par for the Vault, both of these shows are exemplary entries into the twenty-plus years of epic, life-affirming Jack White live performances.

So, fun fact about me: I’ve tried nearly every antidepressant since I was fifteen years old. I experienced anxiety manifesting as obsessive compulsive disorder for most of my life and then depression when I couldn’t manage that anymore.

Sometimes the medications seemed to help, sometimes not. My memory is of always feeling great relief when I went on medication (“why didn’t I take these pills sooner?”) and then great relief again when I’d eventually go off of it (“why did I ever take those pills?”). 
A few years ago I got really fed up with side effects and running in circles mental health-wise. I looked for alternatives and read about promising results using “street” drugs like Ecstasy (MDMA), LSD, DMT, magic mushrooms (psilocybin) and ketamine to treat depression and anxiety. 

I’d always been too terrified to try anything like that — I didn’t even smoke weed until my mid-thirties for fear of what it’d do to my precious little delicate flower of a brain. But I decided I didn’t care anymore. 
This song’s title is a double entendre: Fun Guy/Fungi. It’s about being hopeful that a psychedelic mushroom trip would turn me into a better version of myself.

The Rabbit Hole

In hidden ancient Sumerian scrolls it was written that a trickster God would one day be foiled on his name day 10,000 years henceforth by a group of reluctant heroes. These four ordinary minstrels would band together to do battle and named themselves the Shitbats. Much like the prophesy foretold, these minstrels are less than pure in heart but deadly nonetheless. Armed with guitars, drums and throats, these bats of shit were bestowed with the ability to crush any foe that may gander. Forged in the seventh hell, also known as London, Ontario, these heroes are commonly known as Cat "Shit Commander" Clyde, Mitch "Fair Squire" Decaire, Strummer "Troll Smasher" Jasson, and Dan "Cyclops Tamer" Serre. Blending the abilities of each member created a rip in the fabric of space time that echoed through infinity. With their knowledge of past and future genres, like punk and future punk, rock and future rock, these batty shits strike a balance the likes of which has never been experienced by mere mortals.
