Description: ‘Whirling Dervishes’ is a new hypnotic production inspired by the ancient Sufi tradition in which dancers spin until they reach a simultaneously meditative and ecstatic state. The live performance features a duo between Zubin Kanga on piano and Shiva Feshareki on turntables with 360° ambisonic diffusion and a bespoke lighting display linked to the movement of sound around the room. Premiere of 20min version at Sound Unwrapped, Kings Place by Shiva Feshareki and Zubin Kanga 2023. Commissioned by Zubin Kanga as part of Cyborg Soloists, supported by a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship and Royal Holloway, University of London. We are currently accepting booking requests for the world premiere performance of ‘Whirling Dervishes’ (full version).

Description: In reference to the spinning meditation practice of the Sufi Dervishes, ‘Sama-zan Trip’ is a physical and cosmic dance of energy in which live turntable-manipulation immerses the orchestra and the audience in spatial sound that glides and whirls within the space.  It is a single expansive piece that is accumulative, hypnotic and trance-like; building up and then returning down again. Premiered by Shiva Feshareki and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at Musikprotokoll, Helmut List Halle, 2022. Co-Commissioned by ORF Musikprotokoll. We are currently looking for co-commissioners for this work.

Sama-zan Trip (2022) [Excerpt]

Instrumentation List: Fixed Ambisonic Electronics (or multitrack file) and surround-sound speaker arrangement.

Description: This state-of-the-art 3D sound sculpture is for installation in an exhibition space or concert hall. It was composed live in performance by Shiva Feshareki at Hellerau Arts Centre,  Germany, inside an ambisonic speaker dome,  using her turntables as a unique instrument of sound manipulation. Recordings of her previous acoustic and electronic compositions are used as samples that are spatially and sonically transformed into new perspectives, live in improvisation. The sound sculpture moves within space as intangible objects and spatial patterns, and has since been exhibited as a fixed installation at London’s Southbank Centre. Commissioned by the Hellerau European Centre of the Arts.

Improvisatory mix between Shiva Feshareki, Haroon Mirza and Jack Jelfs using bespoke electronic instruments that respond to light, video, space, acoustics, and magnetism, as well as four technics turntables and a 909. Sampling madonna, m.e.s.h, stravinsky, daphne oram and more.

Start the year with a restorative and rejuvenating gong bath. Recorded live especially for this show, by musician Cathy Eastburn. These instruments are powerful tools for calming, energising, releasing blockages and reducing feelings of anxiety and anger. After a gong bath many people feel a sense of calm and peace; they feel more connected to the world and to others, and also gain a sense of release and easing of tensions both physical and mental. So sit back and take an hour out of your day to allow the harmonic overtones to untangle your mental knots.

To end the show - Shiva Feshareki provides a warped and manipulated version using nothing other than the gong-bath material, with dubplates cut especially for the show. You can experience Cathy’s transcendental gong baths live at Synchronicity Studios in Clapham North, bi-monthly:

VENUS/ZOHREH for String Orchestra

VENUS/ZOHREH is one exponential crescendo in volume, intensity, speed, and pitch exposure. Within this expansion a rich array of direct expression is exposed. After collaboration with the Venus expert and geologist Dr Philippa Mason (envison mission 2029), the composition was crafted using the same methods used to extrapolate information about Venus through what we know about Earth. The emotional journey behind the piece is inspired by my mother, Zohreh. Zohreh in the Persian language translates to Venus, or ‘the morning star’. Therefore, the scientific journey behind the composition is forged through the collaboration with Dr Mason, and the spiritual journey is from my mother Zohreh. These energies combine to create VENUS/ZOHREH.

2hours by train from Copenhagen is Odense, the central city of Denmark.
The long, dark corridors in the basement of the Odense Public Library, is home to Northern Europe’s largest LP collection -  

This title was gained almost inadvertently: As other libraries in Denmark removed LP’s to make space for the rising interest in True Crime in the 1980s, Odense held onto their collection.

I have been commissioned and given free reign over the collection to highlight and present it in new perspectives, for new generations, for new possibilities… 

This public archive features pop, rock, electronica, classical, opera, ballet, rnb, soul, new age, and the most fascinating selection of avant garde music from the early electronic era.

For this show I've selected some of my highlights from Odense, and as usual, you will hear the pieces in real-time, as well as with my turntable manipulations which take the pics into new transfigured states.

I’d like to say a massive thank you to the library for commissioning and hosting me, and to Mads Behrend who guided me through the vast collection.

It is a joy to present this music to everyone, from Odense....

Live from Frankfurt's LAB, Shiva Feshareki & the Ensemble Modern gave the world premiere of OPUS INFINITY on February 29th 2020. 

The turntable virtuoso and composer Shiva Feshareki from London is considered one of the most interesting current discoveries in the fields of contemporary music and electronic club music. For Ensemble Modern, she composed a new work for turntables, ensemble and loudspeakers, which Feshareki arranged at Frankfurt’s LAB according to a painstaking geometrical plan. The piece demonstrates the interconnection of sound with the naturally occurring patterns of the universe. The audience enter this spatial arrangement based on mathematical patterns, free to walk, stand, dance or sit, thereby becoming part of an immersive performance in which the composer manipulates her turntables live, intensifying and alienating allusions to the dancefloor. Together with the instrumentalists, she creates a dynamic sound sculpture which fills the entire space. 

The touch-based turntable spatialisation - which Feshareki controls live, in improvisation - was custom-installed by Christian Duka with state-of-the-art software developed by Auditif (Serafino di Rosario and Mario Buoninfante).
