R' Shlomo z'l.     This portion is the last portion in the book of Bereishis. Bereishis is the book of beginning, and this is the end of the beginning. That means that so far, until this portion everything is a beginning. Suddenly this whole portion talks about Ya'akov Avinu's end. Ya'akov Avinu wants to 'legalos es haketz' (Rashi, Bereishis 49:1), he wanted to reveal to his children the end, but suddenly the spirit of prophecy left him. Do you know what a prophet is? A prophet can tell you what is right and what is wrong. A prophet is a holy man with a very high vision. He can tell you exactly what is right and what is wrong. Moshe Rabbeinu is giving us the Torah on Mount Sinai, and the Torah is on the level of prophecy. Moshe was the highest prophet. It doesn't say anywhere that Mashiach will be a prophet. I'm sure he will be a prophet, but this is not what makes Mashiach the Mashiach. The end is not about prophecy, it's much deeper than prophecy.
