From grimy trap to main-stage D&B, from delicate melodies to stupidly big basslines, from Ukraine to the UK, MaxNRG's got it covered. Since signing to Technique he's demonstrated a level of versatility that's meant each new release comes with the promise of some new twist in the bass-music tale. Listen to the horror-movie darkness of “Danger Zone”, the electro-acid road joint “Dis Way We Gotta Do It” and the proudly Eastern European “Arkan”, and you wouldn't even know it was the same mind at work.

So what's the story this time?

“Now Hear This” is straight wheel-up-and-come-again material. A percussive first thirty-two establishes a base level of tension, before a textbook breakdown and build combo ramps it even further. Then a monster drop, made of battling percussive riffs and driving basslines supported by iron fist drums, provides the rave exactly what it's been waiting for. Then Max breaks it down to show he's still got more where that came from for the second drop. This is a mighty piece of dancefloor science and a party-hyping essential.

Then, of course, it's a different vibe for “Midnight Rider”. Paying homage to his roots, Max weaves balalaika samples into the rough-hewn bass and beats, giving this tune a uniquely haunting quality. This is soulful D&B done Ukrainian style, undeniably led by melody but without ever sacrificing raw dancefloor power. It's a track with a big-room, hands-in-the-air mentality, but delivered with the subtlety that a real instrument brings to the table.

With this release, MaxNRG has shown he's still got no interest in sticking to a formula. Constantly evolving and rewriting the rule-book as he goes, he's capable of reliably supplying the dancefloor with weighty bass and beats while still pushing genre-boundaries. Stay locked, because this journey has many more miles to go.

Living in the UK, you quickly learn that you can't trust the weather to indicate the arrival of summer. For DnB heads, though, there's a far more reliable signal to gear up for festival and holiday season. And now it's here. Yes, Technique's Summer 2017 LP has dropped, and it's done so with Richter-troubling force.

For a start off, it's a monumental fifty-one tracks deep (with two continuous mixes from Muffler thrown in for good measure) featuring contributions from all corners of the drum 'n' bass scene. For example, Viper bosses Matrix & Futurebound pass through, with the insane 8-bit video game riffs of “Scatterbrain”. Brookes Brothers deliver the stripped-back R&B-flavoured “Good to Me”. Invaderz underpin jazz keys with rolling beats in “Gruisin”. And, who would have predicted the appearance of two cuts from the mighty Aquasky?

Plus, of course, the regular Technique roster are out in force. New signings T-Phonic & Deadman give us an instant-classic junglist workout, complete with thundering breaks and savage Reese bass. We've got MaxNRG doing crazy things to melodies in “Soul Fever”, two pieces from Document One, Tantrum Desire's “Gravitate”, L Plus's dancefloor bubbler “Going Away”, tracks from Spectrem...and that's before we even get onto the contributions from label bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith themselves.

Technique Recordings have got previous when it comes to bringing Central and Eastern European artists to our attention. Now, from Ukraine, it's time to meet Tapolsky & VovKING. The more switched on amongst you will remember them from their intriguing formula-twisting excursions on the Technique “Summer 2017” LP. Now, they're back with a four-track EP and the space to demonstrate exactly what they're all about.

As the opening piano riff of “Running” hands the melody to that heart-wrenching vocal, then onto the fragile Rhodes, it's clear we're witnessing assured musicianship at work. This is DnB, sure, the punch and snap of the kick and snare combining with heavyweight bass. But, there's a loose experimental feel to it that means this tune could just as easily be the product of a live electronica band as studio-bound drum 'n' bass scientists.

And the live feeling continues as we move into “Deep Disco”. Deep, reverberant plucks of bass lay the foundation for keys and layered vocal samples. Then Tapolsky & VovKING deliver us into soulful chord changes and call-and-response patterns. They've even reinterpreted the standard build-drop-breakdown structure of DnB, integrating the form with layout of traditional songwriting. This is uncompromisingly unique, but no less dancefloor orientated for that.

Tapolsky & VovKING go even further down their musical rabbit-hole in “Flame”. As volumes and dynamics modulate in a way you haven't quite heard before, and little tension-building moments of silence appear as sounds fall away, we're drawn deep into these producers' world. It has to be heard to be understood.

The intro of “Cosmic Symmetry” sends us into a whirlpool of influences and styles. There's neo-soul, R&B, maybe even UKG in there, but that quirky live-sounding synth-work takes us somewhere that's not quite any of those things. And, under it all, there's the pulse of bassline and beat that mean that, whatever else it might be, this is very definitely drum 'n' bass music.

Let's be crystal clear. You haven't heard DnB done like this before. Tapolsky & VovKING are coming to the table with influences and ideas that are daring and challenging, but, are also emotive and engaging. They've called this EP “Modern Innovation”, and it's proved itself well worthy of that title.
