A Shade of Blue - Legacy Demo Version

"Le café" is one of my favourite pieces from The Nutcracker. I used to listen to it on my mp3 player, but for some bizarre reason, fully turning up the volume wasn't enough to listen to all the instruments. A solution came one night. The silence and solitude of the late hours allowed me to enjoy the beauty of one of Tchaikovsky's greatest works. Back then, to compose music was just a dream. Now, it's something I simply do, and I love it.

I've wanted to respond to one of his open collabs for a while now, but this is the first one that really came together. 

Thanks to Ian for offering up these super cool vocals, they were very inspiring to work with. I love the themes of unity and positivity that he infused into this track.

   This song actually began more than a year ago, when Ken and I were just sniffing each other out. We'd been working on Zeplin's Night Flight, for those of you who remember that long ago, and I was having trouble with latency in my recording. Out of frustration, I recorded a really rough version of this, to which Ken put really amazingly perfect drums. Shortly after, I got my recording issues settled and we continued on with Night Flight, shelving this half baked creature for more than a year. But it wasn't forgotten. 
     In the meantime, I'd been following John Anthony on both YouTube (https://youtube.com/@johnanthony5720?si=-ooQcUUQaemrk-NH) and on the Cloud
     . If you were ever curious about how Jimmy Page's fingers looked in the studio, do yourself a favor and check him out on there, too. 
    Anyway, since he can play literally every Zep song note for note, I figured I'd ask him if he would replace my pitiful by comparison guitar part with his own. He not only did that in numerous sections, as Page would've, but played the mandolin for it, too. 
    Now, we had a song that was almost ready, but of course we needed someone to fill Plant's part. So, of course we asked The Mysterious Decibel if he'd do the honors, which he came through with in grand fashion. 
   Now that the song was done, we needed it to be mixed, too. So, we tapped our resident mixing expert, Stephen to do that for us. It was a surprisingly difficult mix to get everyone to agree on. And there were philosophical questions that arose during the mixing process, too. We're very lucky, though, that Stephen is not only an expert producer, but a great teammate as well, with the patience of your favorite high school teacher. 
  Anyway, our hope is that we did the almighty Led Zeppelin honor with this one. We hope you all enjoy our reverent tribute to one of our collective favorites as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

I strained my wrist playing guitar while practicing a new piece I hope to post in a month or two, so in the meantime I decided to freshen up a short piece I had on SC from a few years ago. It’s a simple melody, a musical meditation, towards peace; the dove of peace carries this message, through many cultures and religions. Peace is needed now, more than ever. Hope you may spend 2 minutes with me to meditate.

GRATITUDE - It's all about the music!

It took me some time to finish this tune, as I composed this almost a decade ago. For some reason, many other musical projects kept distracting me from investing the kind of time this tune, “GRATITUDE”, required and I believe deserved. 
But, I decided to not let it remain on the back burner any longer. 
I’m happy to say I finally got it done.

This tune is all about the gratitude I have towards everything that encompasses music. There’s gratitude simply for music existing in the first place. It’s my heartfelt tribute towards the art of music in all its forms. It is also just as much a tribute to ALL the musicians, from all walks of life, famous and not so famous... with some of course being highly influential and motivational for me on a personal level, all of which have been a source of inspiration in one way or another over the course of my life.

The essence of music is one of those big unanswered mysteries in the human experience. Why is it that we humans perceive the sounds of music in the way we do? No one has ever really come up with a plausible explanation, yet music remains as a special art form that has existed throughout modern civilization and has been expressed in countless ways. It’s pretty incredible… isn’t it?!

So, I conclude with the hopes that you will give a good listen to my tune “GRATITUDE”. 
After all this is a tribute to every one out there... whether you are a fellow musician, or the non-musician that simply loves to listen to music and one that embraces this wonderful and diverse art form.

In recent years I have the habit of converting poems into songs and here is one of them which is based on “Alone” by Edgar Allan Poe.  It was said that this poem was never published in his lifetime.  I think I first shared this song here about four years ago.  In this version, I enhanced the backing music and did the vocals all over again.

Autumn Tint of Gold

Hey…. So I put down the slide guitar the other day, and picked up the mandolin after a slide solo wasn’t working. Then did this little song. A rather surreal look at the metaphysics of stars as they relate to us. Occasionally, we are at a loss to make sense of this life. I find perspective in observing the night sky, among other things, even if for only a brief moment. Hanging out with others helps too. So does playing music. I usually laugh at myself in those moments and realize just how fascinating life can be. I mentioned this story before, but in a different context. I have been ‘caretaking’ a fire ant colony for over twenty years. The common sense of today’s world would seek to destroy the colony, as labeling them as ‘nuisance pests’ comes with a dire consequence for the ants. Fire ants bite only to get a grip and then sting (from the abdomen) and inject a toxic alkaloid venom called solenopsin. Anyway, the colony had been in my neighbor’s yard decades ago, and I did my best to encourage him not to destroy the colony. But after seeing a friend of his riding over the colony with a riding lawn mower, I knew the colony was doomed if it stayed there. Then one day, while emptying the kitchen compost bucket into the compost pile, I saw a long trail of fire ants coming from my neighbor’s yard into mine. They had begun to build a mound near a brush pile in the back. So the ants have been here for 5 years or so. Sure, they may strip an aspen sapling bare, or try and sneak into my vegetable garden, but for the most part, they have been good neighbors. They have come out of their mound now that it is a little warmer. I was cleaning up the gardens in the back, and noticed hundreds of them working on their mound. I looked yesterday and I saw this one ant carrying a large twig, way bigger than him, on top of the mound. As he walked, the twig was waving back and forth like a sword raised in the air. I laughed (to myself) and realized it had been a while since I had done so. This song is about all those little things in life, like that, that bring us back…. Hope you like it. The Eclectic Collective – composition

This song began with Josh coming up with the fonky-ass bass line and sharing it with everyone else. First up to bat was Ken, of course, who really matched the idea I had for the bass perfectly and gave it some flavor, too. Once we had a rhythm section solidified, Tez jumped in with the Kruangbin inspired arpeggios, and really gave the whole thing the flavor that it ended up with. Scotty followed soon after with his melodic/rhythmic leads that match his awesome vocal melodies. Next up was Stephen, who laid in the fiery solo towards the end, as well as some really trippy e-bowed guitar throughout. Then JJ came along and lit it up with his electric piano and synth. Finally, Chris came forward and added the distinct, exciting guitar intro. 
  Of course, we needed someone to produce and mix it, so we asked Tez to handle this one, which he did with his usual high wizardly magic. It is very gratifying to all of us to have Chris back in the mix on this one, as well as some upcoming releases, as well. This was the first time any of us has collaborated with Scotty, and we are thrilled that we finally got a chance. He's a creative, driven, and very agreeable musical partner, who's willing to work with us until we all get it right. We all hope this is just the first of many with him involved. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.
