ARTIST’S NOTE: 
I composed Drift one afternoon in May when I was literally adrift in disappointment, feeling low, uninspired, and fatigued. Empty. How could I create when I was so low? And a thought rang back answering like a bell  — just show up!

All I had to do, my inner voice told me, was show up, put your fingers on the keyboard for a moment. And I did, using the laptop’s built-in MIDI, selecting a VST called Cinema Strings, instinctively I hit an F6 chord — I have an affinity with the key of F because, as a student, I played French Horn, an F instrument. So I’m pressing the keys, and by a slow count of eight of the metronome’s clicks — bam! The music started playing in my head as if already written. I raced to unravel it in threads of melodies, searching for keys that matched what I was hearing in my mind’s ears.

The lesson for me as an artist is to remember to keep faith despite how I might feel. Because the music is waiting for a humble vessel. Just show up.

Everything

I was on a Virginia recently (DC and Virginia Beach were great) and instead of writing an online review, I was compelled to write a musical review of a less than stellar experience I had at a hotel. Recorded on my iPhone using GarageBand with the vocal song using the basic iPhone earbuds.
I stepped into the hotel. I noticed an unpleasant smell. It was a combination of old cigarettes and mildew. 
I went into my room. I could feel a sense of doom. As I took off my shoes and socks and my bare feet touched the grimy floor. 
Things are not the best at the Best Western, they’re going downhill fast, and I’m trying to pretend the glass is half full. I’m trying really hard to have a nice stay at this hotel. I’m trying not to lose my cool.
There was a peloton in the gym, so I sat on it and tried to login, but the bike wouldn’t work because the Wi-Fi wasn’t connected .
I went back to my room for a shower, and it was like I had a special superpower because when I reached for the handle to turn on the water, it came off in my hand .
Sometimes you can have a little bit of bad luck when you book a cheap room and try to save a buck. You can get angry and sit around and stew or you can break out into a song and write a musical review.

This song began as Carl's tribute poem to our drummer, Ken. Carl came up with the chord progression and started a project, to which he invited the rest of us. This is the third song Eclectic Collective has done that is a tribute by Carl to one of our members.  We couldn't feel more honored than to be the subjects of his wild and boundless creativity.
  Fittingly, Ken was first in line to add his magnificent drums. Once we had drums, Josh had something to work with to add his bass, which he did shortly after the drums were up. Mark paid the project a visit next, not only editing it to fit the cool drum and strings bridge, but supplying the VST timbale drums, as well. Stephen jumped in soon after, adding the melodic electric guitar riffs that appear throughout. Not to be outdone, JJ added the throwback psychedelic synth that pops up towards the end. Finally, Tez came along and added the electrifying solo that appears about a third of the way in, as well as the one at the end. 
  Once the recording was finished, we turned it over to Stephen to mix in his always professional manner. 
  This song is all about our very talented teammate and brother, Ken, and it is well deserved, too. As mentioned, this is the third song from Carl about one of us. It's hard to describe the feeling of having someone who you respect take the time and energy to think about you in such a positive way as to produce a song about you. Then to have all your buddies join in to amplify it to a solid song is just mind-blowing. We are all very grateful to Carl for not only sharing his music with us, but for his thoughtful consideration of each of us as subjects. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

I've always questioned the pop filled mainstream being an artist. The music the masses listen to generally as background music, with some exceptions, is pretty shockingly shit and generally pretty thoughtless. It's annoyed me ever more since having kids and the sexualisation of music is pretty bad taste given so many young people connect to it with an ever more free media offering. I ain't prudish as an individual but I'd like to think I'm thoughtful when it comes to projecting healthy things for people to be thinking about in our actual reality through my music. Celebrity image and the sexualisaion of art which finds the eyes and ears of kids needs to be challenged. It gives them that fake unrealistic pedestal to look up to and they chase this unrealistic artificially beautiful person that is selling their image. Psychologically when people don't find that in themselves I'd imagine it generally has a negative outcome.

We do it on a larger scale on social media where most people project just the happy things in their life again confusing people into wanting that perfect greener grass on the other side when that's not reality in most cases

In my pea head opinion we need more real and less fake not just with creativity but the way we sell ourselves to each other. Nobody is perfect but if some alien race checked in on Facebook first they'd have a pretty warped idea of what humans actually are!
