Tense Souls

"It's Hopeful Time Again" (v2, 2023)

A new version and arrangement of my earlier song, a.k.a. ”It’s Xmas Time Again”. I experimented with some different chords, inversions, voicings and chord progressions etc. and this is the result!

This was played by me using the Korg SGProX digital stage piano as a master keyboard. The main keyboard sound here is from the Yamaha Montage 8 (the great and ever so lovely Yamaha TX816 Electric piano performance which was converted from the original TX816 patch), layered with Gospel Musicians' Neo-Soul Keys Studio 2 (Dyno Rhodes) and Keyscape (Roland MKS-20). Other sounds that I have been privileged to use come mainly from the great UVI SonicPass instrument collection and the Arturia V Collection. The drums come from Native Instruments Abbey Road 80s Drummer. 

Recorded and mixed using Cubase Pro 13. Mixed with Cubase, with some very significant amount of help from iZotope Neutron 4. Mastered with iZotope Ozone 11.

All of us have forgotten so much of what once united humans without it being perfect, that's for sure, but the teaching of respect, love and peace were instilled in us. It's up to everyone to see what they do with it next... and it's unfortunately... a long whisper...

Nous avons tous oublié une grande partie de ce qui unissait autrefois les humains sans que cela soit parfait, c'est sûr, mais l'enseignement du respect, de l'amour et de la paix nous a été inculqué. C'est à chacun de voir ce qu'il en fera ensuite... et c'est malheureusement... un long murmure...

Marc and I worked together off and on over the years. This photo is from 2005. Tragically Marc was taken from us way too early. Earlier this year Susa managed to get files extracted from his recording system and I've managed to find 3 completed recordings. This one I think is the last one he completed (Blue Sky Paradise) which possibly alludes to where we live (Whakatu-Nelson Aotearoa-NZ). Sure is a graceful beautiful song. Marc wrote recorded and performed everything here.

There's Always A Choice

"Jamming w/ Jazz Bass" (Edit: Mastered in iZotope Ozone on January 13th, 2025.)

A little excercise that I finished today. I made this track originally some time ago playing a VST bass, but after I finally got a Jazz Bass recently I wanted to try to play and record something with it, and here we go! 

Played by me using sounds from different VST instrument collections (Rhodes V8 Pro electric piano, Native Instruments Komplete Now collection & Abbey Road 1980s Drums, UVI SonicPass collection). The bass was played by me with a Fender American Ultra Jazz Bass (Cobra Blue). 

Sorry about the mistakes with the bass.. But after I sold my beautiful G&L Interceptor bass guitar in the late 1990's it has now been maybe 25 years since I played bass the last time, and I'm practicing:) 

Especially playing with the correct timing and with right & consistent velocities was really challenging. I also actually played the bass line maybe too loud, so had to do some EQ'ing and stuff afterwards.

I wrote this song for my son who went to Australia a while back. Before he went we went camping and surfing over to the west of Ireland to the Maharees, beautiful place. We camped in the dunes, lit a camp fire, cooked burgers, drank beer and later we lay on our backs watching the stars. The sun when it sets in the West of Ireland is Golden as it sinks into the sea. I am comparing the Golden Sun to my Golden son.

This song began with Terry sharing an intriguing Eastern sounding synth and minimal beat with Ken, who added a really solid beat to bring out the strong rhythm of the song. Once they had a solid foundation and skeleton, they shared it with the rest of the Eclectic Collective. I added my five string fretless bass in a dubby line that was inspired by Tez's hot skank part. Then JJ poured his magic into it, too. Stephen came up with the shocking dynamic lift towards the end, and Tez piled on to light it up. 
  Then MD got a hold of it and wrote and sang some of his trademark, fun lyrics and vocals in the first part of the song. Ken, not to be left out of the melodic experience, added the vocals at the end. 
  After we all had everything in the can, the Texas Tea combo of Stephen and Terry produced and mixed the whole thing down. This wasn't their first rodeo mixing a project together, and it really shows in the end quality. They also have several duo projects up on both of their pages that are worth checking out.  
  We think the end result is reminiscent of Massive Attack and Thievery Corporation, two big influences on a few of us. We all hope you enjoy listening to this song as much as we enjoyed creating it.
