To mark their 25th year as one of the most esteemed imprints in dance music, Hospital Records head deeper into 2021 with five more tracks on top of their groundbreaking selection of 25 brand new remixes, reworks, covers and VIPs of NHS classics, combining pinnacle Hospital figures and friends of the label for an all-encompassing celebration of drum & bass. ‘AFT25PARTY’ is an unmissable follow-up to the widely appraised ‘H25PITAL’ compilation released earlier this year, serving you with an extra dosage of fresh 174BPM sonics.

The long-awaited Caracal Project remix of Camo & Krooked’s ‘Set It Off’ featuring hip-hop legend Jeru The Damaja finally sees the light of day after being one of the most sought after drum & bass dubs of 2020. The France based producer’s futuristic sound design is a stark yet fitting contrast to the iconic flows of Jeru The Damaja where two sounds collide on this breathtaking remix.

Triple threat supergroup Kings Of The Rollers meet drum & bass titan S.P.Y once again but this time the tables are turned, with the trio remixing the old-school rave inspired ‘See Your Face Again’. Upping the tempo and injecting a sinister bassline, this remix is a force not to be reckoned with.

Lynx’s 2015 anthem ‘Clap Track’ gets a genre-bending spice up from Manchester’s very own Think Tonk. With the original being so large it landed a feature in the ‘Need For Speed’ game series, Think Tonk’s weighty interpretation sees pounding 808s, playful horns and bashment influences accumulate into an unstoppable stomper.

Stepping up for remix duties on Q-Project’s ‘Computer Love’ is Kessler. Hailing from Belfast but residing in Rotterdam, the dance music prodigy’s usual work can be found within the realms of garage and breaks. A frequent airwave sound supplier on the likes of Rinse FM, Beatport and Balamii, expect raw jungle choppage and a warped bassline sent from above.

Drum & bass heavyweight Villem is up next with a stunning rebuild of Peter Nice Trio’s ‘Harp Of Gold’, which was the first ever release on Hospital Records way back in 1996. Paying homage to the classic NHS loungecore style, Villem’s recreation of the track from the ground up features live harp re-recordings, beefed up drum breaks and silky smooth melodies.

Two imprints from opposite sides of the Atlantic come together in 2015 in the name of 'BRSTL Hardcore' – the new, four-track EP from Brazilian-born, Bristol-based DnB producer, S.P.Y. Following a prolific year on his home label, Hospital Records, where he released his acclaimed double album totaling 24 tracks ('Back to Basics Chapters One and Two'), S.P.Y has collated four originals to be released via NEST.

S.P.Y (real name Carlos Lima) explored a darker, edgier sound in Back to Basics last year, reflecting on the early days of Drum & Bass in a noble nod to the old school. And while 'BRSTL Hardcore' carries on some of the redolence of the 90s sound found in the double album, the EP’s main attributes lie within the energy of the production, with S.P.Y concentrating on maximum bass levels aimed directly at the dancefloor. From the snarling punches in “BRSTL Hardcore” to the dramatic atmospherics of “Mass Effect”, the new EP from S.P.Y boasts a gritty, stripped back aesthetic that both DnB newcomers and longtime Hospital Records fans can equally appreciate.

If you tried to make a list of the DnB producers who've achieved the kind of success Drumsound & Bassline Smith have, you'd find yourself running out of names very quickly. Prolific output, underground credibility, rave-destructive potential, foundational innovation, even mainstream-radio appeal, they've nailed every metric. And, now, they're dropping their third artist album, and, with that reputation preceding them, we already know it's going to be a killer. If proof were needed, though, the first taste is here.

“Come With Me”, as the title suggests, pulls us in immediately. Drumsound & Bassline Smith set us up with a slow-jam bass and R&B vocal. Even as gentle Rhodes arpeggios signal laid-back vibes, though, a kick-build indicates approaching danger, and the tune drops us into beat and bassline fury.

There's a grinding mid-range timbre that's pure dirt. It cuts through the mix, underpinned by Drumsound & Bassline Smith's trademark ultra-tight and punchy rolling drums. However, this might be a dancefloor powerhouse of a tune, but it's a lot more than that. Woven through the track are suggestions of other tunes from across the eras of DnB, giving the tune a depth and timeless quality which is going to mean this isn't just a vicious deejay weapon. It is a vicious deejay weapon, sure, but it's a lot more besides.

We might have been given a clue as to where Drumsound & Bassline Smith are going with their LP. “Come With Me” is a party tune, a dancefloor smasher, there's no mistaking it. But, with it's collision of subtlety and hype, soul and aggression, it places itself as part of a narrative about DnB music and its history. If one track can do all that, the whole album might just be something monumental.

Upgrade’s return to Serial Killaz is like a long lost friend coming back for one last bonkers session. Whatever this guy does simply oozes quality but not the glossy, hand buffed type you may be thinking, no way mate, not in a million years. Upgrade’s production is simply a combination of a raw, no fucks given attitude and years of doing whatever he wants and quite simply - it works. One of the many reasons he’s always welcome at our door.

‘Base’ has already had an exclusive via UKF and caused countless posts of upset regarding the spelling of everyone's favourite frequency. Simply put, if you like a double bass and a ton of heavy breakbeats to knock your block off - this one you. ‘Function’ harks back to Upgrade’s jungle roots with a hard slap of trademark Serial Killaz. A tune no doubt made with the label in mind.

The EP title track ‘First Request’ changes direction, flips the script and does a 360 headspin. Muddy bass, hints of classic beats and some epic percussion makes this a go to intro tune. Listen carefully and you might even get a taste of some Bristol influence here.

Slicing up the end, Upgrade comes with ‘Gangbeasts’ alongside Newcastle donny Scudd. Engage the rebels, stick your head down, embrace the haze and get down to this. Darkside business.
