I'm making a special effort this fall to record on the 60 meter shortwave broadcast band, home of low powered domestic broadcasters in tropical regions. This recording was made in Brooklyn, NY at 1002 UTC aka 6:02 am EDT during the brief dawn enhancement of reception. My receiving setup consists of the Winradio Excalibur SDR (software defined radio) and the Wellbrook ALA 1530+ loop.

A Big Bonfire Of Friendship and Mutual Understanding

No fancypants mix this, but a bump and grind relief map of the FM dial from 87.9 to 107.9 as recorded at The Tuning Lab in Flatbush, Brooklyn 12/31/14-15. Over thirty pirate stations were on the air, and I attempted to record as many as I could find in a span of about 20 minutes as the old year gave way to the new. Listening levels and audio quality shift depending on the station. Occasional blips of FCC licensed stations are heard as I tune by, but the content here is 95% pirate.

So, a year or two ago Ryan Stively made an instrumental piece called Missing Cities and around the same time I recorded a chunk of shortwave sound that I called Missing Cities. When makng some pieces for the recent Shortwave Shindig 2015 broadcast I decided the twain should meet.

I've only rarely heard the sign-ons of the Brooklyn Pirates due to their unpredictability and with one exception the programming just crashes in midstream. However just before 7:00 pm today (5/12/15) I caught a loop...a woman's voice repeating "La Voix du Peuple." After 12 minutes a stream started...went silent for 43 seconds and that started again. This station is on sporadically mornings and evenings. Earlier today on the same frequency. I heard a station possibly identifying as Turku FM with Turkic language programming and music. They went off earlier in the afternoon.
