In the first track of Magnolia, Someday, the narrator yearns to find a partner. He thinks that finding someone to love him will make him better. As the song progresses, it becomes clearer that the narrator is not in a stable state of mind.

Someday

In the title track of Magnolia, the narrator finds his dream girl. However, the problems the narrator revealed in Someday are completely clear now. The line between reality and fantasy is beginning to blur for our protagonist. Completely obsessed with the object of his desire nothing will stop him from pursuing Magnolia.

Magnolia

In the third song of Magnolia the narrator finally completely opens up about his problems and his troubled past. He has hurt his flower and desperately tries to speak to her to explain what is wrong. In the end, he breaks down; afraid that because of his past he'll never be able to really love or trust anyone, even Magnolia.

I Can't Help Myself

In the fourth track of Magnolia, the narrator has lost both himself and his flower. Like other men in his family, he lacks control of his temper, but he would do anything for his flower. He doubts that he can do it, but he promises to change for her. In doing so he learns something about himself and what it means to love someone in the first place.

I'll Change

In the final song of Magnolia, the relationship of our narrator's dreams comes crashing down on him. Reality has finally manifested itself. Through time, our narrator learns how to accept loss and the meaning of real love. In the end, he learns to let go.
