Music Ninja Radio #80: Beach Fossils, Brockhampton, SZA & Mini-Mix

Inspired by Japanese Breakfast's dreamy, enveloping latest album, the front half of this week's show featured a diverse mix of new tunes to get lost in. From there, it veered into some disco inspired indie including tunes from Arcade Fire's newest album. After a healthy dose of brightness, I sprinkled in some moody electronic music before closing out with a mini-mix inspired by Four Tet's Fabriclive album, @iamroosevelt's Midnight Versions EP and my very serious Frank Ocean fomo.

With special guest @tylerhawkins, this week’s episode of TMN Radio was a particularly fun one featuring a mix of new age soul, R&B, hip-hop and house. On the eve of his performance at our ‘Danksgiving’ North Bay Fire benefit show, Tyler shared a couple unreleased tracks alongside songs that have served as inspiration. The second half hones in on some of my favorite new electronic releases from Mr. Carmack’s flawless remix of a Chromeo classic to Yaeji’s hip-house perfection. Also mixed in are a few top notch house selections from Ditongo, Lane 8 and John Monkman c/o my good friend and former co-host Dom. Saturday’s Danksgiving party raised $3400 for the RCU Community Fund!

Episode #96 - 12/15/2017
This week's episode kicked off with a chilled out soul / jazz vibe that carried through out, across genres. Although there were notable releases from some veterans, Brockhampton's Saturation III was easily the project I was the most excited for. Their third album of the year delivered possibly their most ambitious and interesting so far. I matched its title by playing 4 tracks from Saturation III. The second half of the show delved into some jazzy, off-kilter house from Frits Wentink, Ben Hauke, Kerem Akdag, O'Flynn and more. I had to close out the show with a behemoth new Nicolas Jaar track from the deluxe edition of Sirens.

As the name suggests, this week's episode is largely a celebration of Oxnard, Anderson .Paak's long-awaited major label debut. Before we get into that, though, we had a laid back collection of tracks. Highlights included the dreamy stylings of Launder, a new sound from Little Dragon and a low-key gem from wifisfuneral. The remainder of the show focuses on Anderson .Paak's catalogue dating back to his days as Breezy Lovejoy--including remixes, features and original music from the newly minted superstar. With a ton of new music out on Friday, this show gave you a little bit of everything. The first two segments featured some pop and electronica with heavy jazz undertones including Flying Lotus' psychedelic return, a cut off Matt Martians slacker breakup album and Phonte's silky smooth Kaytranada collab. Rico Nasty and Kenny Beats latest album anchored the 10-track hip-hop segment alongside standout cuts from new ScHoolboy Q, Pivot Gang and SOB X RBE projects. This episode was fully curated, and mixed live, by our two special guests. The first hour was an education in contemporary African music with DJ Ally Fresh, in town all the way from Nairobi. The second featured an introduction to UK Garage from Miles Otway, a UK-native and host of The UK Show on BFF.fm (Sat, midnight-2am).
