Welcome to my special storytellers' mix series, called "Ancient Hearts", which tells stories from many cultures, invoking the heart and soul of our ancestors, which are rooted in the ancient melancholic sound, which speak of the great suffering in life, BUT also arrive, in the end, at a home full of love and life and joy.  

Through exploring the sound of various cultures, we begin to see the same spirit, message, and meaning among the people. We must travel through our sorrow to truly find joy. We must move in relationship with our ancestors' victory in suffering or lose our entire future and hope.

The first in this DJ mix series, as told by Desert Raven, is inspired by the sound of Andalucía, Spain, with a few songs from Latin America that show roots continuity and which also express a unique new regional vision.  This story is called "Las Lagrimas Del Sol", which means, "The Tears Of The Sun" in Spanish.

https://soundcloud.com/pale-penguin is one of the key figures in Greek electronic scene. Based in Thessaloniki, Greece. He’s been DJ'ing for almost 20 years, being one of the best Greek Breaks/Techno/Tech-House DJ's. In his portfolio there are appearances in big festivals (Sola Luna, Balkan Voices, Urban Rhythm, Reworks, Butterfly, Spring Festen) alongside Slam, Felix Da Housecat, Dave Angel, Luke Slater, Dominic Eulberg, Modeselektor, Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts), Coldcut, Octave One, Eddie Piller etc, and many venues throughout Greece and Europe. He has done warm-ups to artists likes Rjd2, Thievery Corporation, Richard Dorfmeister, Nightmares On Wax, Kid Loco, Mushroom (Massive Attack), Frank Popp, Bjorn Torske, Bentley’s Rhythm Ace, Snowboy, Hooverphonic etc. He was one of the first radio producers playing Breaks/Drum N' Bass and Electronica in his legendary “Tricknology”, “Brainwash” and “Cinematica Paradiso” radio shows.

Greece is a place of many contradictions. 

A unique piece of land which the ancient Gods of Olympus ruled, a place where the beautiful mountains meet the valleys and the amazing islands in Aegean and Ionian seas. Greece is the place of myths and stories, a place where the ancient civilization meets the modern culture. A place full of music that Orpheus gave to the land when he lived close to Olympus. 

The traditional circle dances of Thrace with gaida and bagpipes, the traditional folk songs of Central, East and West Macedonia with chalkina, trumpets, tympana, clarina and koudounia, the pentatonic and polyphonic songs of Epirus, syrtos and Kalamatianos from Peloponesse, Bouzouki in Attica, the romantic serenades of the Ionian islands with the mandolins and guitars, the amazing rizitika, the lyras and laouto from Crete and many many more. 

This is a mix of Downtempo and Organic-House tracks full of traditional music influences. This is something that uses elements that are great in the past and are still beautiful and emotional in the present. Enjoy!

ANCIENT HEARTS - Ep.3 - The Vision Of Elysium - As Told By Pale Penguin

Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1885–1886) by John Singer Sargent is a captivating vision of twilight a poem in paint where innocence, light, and time converge. Set in the garden of Farnham House in Broadway, in England’s Cotswolds, Sargent began the work during the summer of 1885, not long after departing Paris in the wake of the “Madame X” controversy. The idea was sparked during a September boating trip on the Thames at Pangbourne, where he saw Chinese lanterns glowing among trees and lilies at dusk. The painting depicts two young girls Dolly to the left and Polly to the right lighting paper lanterns amid roses, carnations, and tall white lilies in bloom. Originally, Sargent had planned to use the dark-haired daughter of his friend Frederick Barnard as a model, but she was replaced by the Barnard sisters for their fair hair, which better suited the luminous palette. Painted en plein air with impressionistic spontaneity, Sargent worked each evening for just a few precious minutes during the fleeting “blue hour” to capture the delicate balance between lantern glow and fading daylight. As real flowers wilted with the advancing season, he replaced them with artificial ones to preserve the harmony of the composition. The canvas was originally rectangular but later trimmed by about two feet on the left to emphasize the central figures and bring it closer to a square format. When it was unveiled at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition in 1887, it received both criticism for its “Frenchified” style and praise from admirers, including Sir Frederic Leighton, who encouraged its acquisition for the nation. It became the first of Sargent’s works to enter a British public collection, and today it resides in Tate Britain. The scene captures the quiet enchantment of evening the hush of a garden, the gleam of lanterns, the fragrance of blooms distilled into a single suspended breath where the ephemeral beauty of nature and the artistry of light merge into something timeless.
