The first release from San Francisco-based producer Matthew Favorites (a.k.a. Matthew Howell) is an exercise in modern hybridity. Showing off Howell's background in sound design, "Gravitas" constructs a sonic sculpture that builds from fragments of Berlin techno, UK dubstep, and new school tech house. The track's meticulously arranged hi-hats stab through and puncture an echo chamber of distressed vocal calls and prowling bass tones. Also on display is Howell's fascination with the euphoria of classic trance. Careful to side-step the negative connotations of the genre, he incorporates complex melodies and emotive song structure to create the kind of tune that's as killer on a pair of earbuds as it is working Room One at Fabric.
