I wanted to create 'punk rock' without the traditional 'rock' instruments. I began this piece wanting as little synthesizer treatment as possible. Hence the guqin plays fuzz guitar lines with percussive noises played on its body to add dimension. The theremin appears as string lines.
Aegri Somnia means a sick man's dream. Various idioms and platitudes from Asia and Australia are referenced during a period of a cultural clash in my life.

I decided to put Ave Maria on the CD as it had been my fav life performance piece for the theremin. The arrangement pays homage to "Switched on Bach" by Wendy Carlos and "Snowflakes are dancing" by Isao Tomita.

"I wanted a lead sound I would use to solo with. I was hearing square-waves, a little portamento and a pitch glitch at the start. I kept it mono, so the pitch glitch on the carrier only took place on the attack. 
Why I named it SixMilSLO? Well, the theme from Six Million Dollar Man came to me as I was programming :) 

In the video I created, you will see that I added a twist (easter egg) to this sound."

"I wanted to utilise the LFO in a fancy way. Play and hold a note for a square-wave type sound affected by the LFO depth and rate (64). Upon release, hear a saw-tooth like 'echo' of what you just played but 5th up (in the octave above).
Like a star twinkling. Hence the name.
Play staccato for a different effect"

"As a synth player, I often play 'guitar' lead sounds when soloing.

Shueh-li Ong has released her new single Jeune et Animée, written expressly for the theremin in Rondo form aka ABACA with a few twists!
Jeune has been road-tested during a recent mini tour, as Shueh-li developed the style of playing she imagined would befit the recording.

Two of her best mates are featured on the track, John A Martinez of Xenovibes U.S.A. (on drums), and Michael Spicer of Electric Muse Singapore (on piccolo).
Jeune et Animée showcases once again Shueh-li’s method of writing and producing in-studio. Where she works with sound design/synthesis as building blocks, experimenting with performance nuances/techniques on theremin and synth, programming, notating and tracking.

Though there are just a few representations in recorded music that break the mold, “In my own way, I wanted to alter the stereotypical notion of the theremin having a wimpy vibrato-exaggerated voice. It can be emotional and, gutsy!”
Jeune et Animée is just one of several upcoming releases, displaying a commitment to exploring new ways to represent the theremin in performance, while digging into her classical roots to use as bone structure for contemporary composition.

“It was October 2012 and Thriller was playing on the radio. I had just finished a concert and wondering what to work on next. Thriller called out to me, and, my theremin & foley fingers got itchy!
So I got in touch with Chris Currell in Japan to see if he would like to help out. The rest is history!” ~ Shueh-li

Into the arrangement, Shueh-li breathed synthesizers, foley, vocals/vocoder and theremin (‘spooky lines’ & more), while Chris added synth percussion and guitar lines.
The Aussie-born Singapore synthesist-producer was careful not to disturb the essence of the song when she laid out the structure and stylistic nuances, before handing her arrangement over to Chris; an alum of the BAD album & Wembley tour.
Former radio DJ, Jeff Bell, stepped into Vincent Price’s shoes.

After three CDs, this is a new single (1st track from CD 'A Working Title - special edition') and the 1st since my move to Nashville to find new inspiration! 

"I'm leaving you a message" is a story about an individual, whose life revolves round his cellphone, missing the life playing out in front of him.
Nashville is all about lyrics that tell a story and I have tried to practice some of what it preaches by writing in a more colloquial way and to take my time to do so. In the studio I practiced what I preach and the end result is ... well you will have to listen to the song and decide for yourself! I truly hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed producing it!

Shueh-li is best known for the way she melds electronic-pop-rock-jazz, her fav sci-fi instrument (the theremin) with synths, tin-whistle, piano, guqin & sound design.
Her sound is a poignant brand of ancient art meets new technology, and, east meets west. 

Having written, recorded & produced three CDs under the Xenovibes concept (2003/4, 2006/7, 2009), Australian born Shueh-li (Shelley) would release her 4th album under her name signifying her branching off on her own.
In 2012, the CD release concert garnered the Nashville SCENE's critics' pick, with consecutive concerts held at the Steinway Paino Gallery in 2014, 2016 & 2017 being recognised in the same category.

Shueh-li, aka Singapore's diva of the theremin and Nashville's Queen (Straits Times and Nashville Scene respectively); has been compared to such self produced artists as Kate Bush, Janet Jackson & Ryuichi Sakamoto, but her sound is very much her own!
