Here's my latest offering to the Shuj Roswell catalog. A departure from the Electro Hip-Hop Soul stylings that many have grown accustomed to. For this release, I really wanted to set a minimal LoFi Hip-Hop vibe while recording and producing the musicians from my live band: Eric Imbrosciano on drums, Sarah Mount on Saxophone, and the brothers, Mark and Matt Wilkolak on Trombone and Trumpet respectively. I also reached out to the good homie, Brisco Jones, who can be heard on the cuts. This EP is sample free and contains all original music.

Tell Me. is a downtempo boom bap vibe that rides over a piano hook that I layered some lofi vocals and synthy horn lines over. It features a distinct vocal sample I created through an AI program using a voice similar to that of 50 Cent that says, “Tell me its real, that feeling that we feel”. Essentially this line is asking for reassurance that euphorically-connected feelings of happiness, trust, closeness to others and enhanced emotional empathy won’t ever go away

I’m very humbled and honored to announce my next single out on The Gradient Perspective newest Electro Soul Broken Beat Compilation!
I’ve been playing this one live for a while so I’m super stoked to finally release it. I really wanted to showcase the clav, my horn section and the bass guitar, which is performed by the homie, Chris Wright. I also had some fun bringing my wife, Kristin in on the vocal parts. I end the song with some tasty guitar licks in a soaring solo full of tension and release.

This is my contribution to the PLF Producers, Oops All Swirls! compilation

To my musical ear, Pretty Lights production is already perfect so I had some reservations about submitting a remix for this project when first approached by Jordan
 After giving it some thought, I decided to treat this more like an edit than a remix. I wasn’t interested in creating a new version or altering something I already considered flawless. But an edit gave me room to rearrange and re contextualize rather than replace
 I chose my favorite Pretty Lights track, High School Art Class, and immediately started digging through live versions from the past two years. I pulled out moments that stood out to me most and began weaving them together with elements of the original studio production
 What ended up happening was the creation of a new swirl from my favorite swirls while still keeping true to important elements and transitions in the song
 Once I had the arrangement locked, I recorded some original guitar lines and as a final touch, layered in some of my favorite Bob Ross quotes to act as a gentle guide through the track, because who better to teach Art Class than Bob Ross?

Everybody Loves The Sun (feat. Mikey Thunder And Adam Revell)

My mom used to play Elton John’s music all the time. I grew up on it. His songs played a large part of my musical childhood. In fact, I’m told that the first song I ever sang was, “B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets.” Having not listened to much of Elton’s music in recent years, I found myself truly inspired having gone to see the movie, Rocketman. The music brought back intense feelings from both my childhood and where I find myself in the present moment. I immediately went into the studio and started work on this remix.

As a musician, I’ve always related deeply to the original song which was inspired by the 1951 science fiction short, The Rocket Man, by Ray Bradbury. The story depicts the complex relationship between technology and psychology, and in particular, an astronaut's love of the stars. A man ventures into space for three months at a time and returns to earth for only a few short days to see his wife and son, deeply torn between his love of space and his family. The song imagines what his long adventures, while filled with loneliness, would be like. I've always viewed this as a metaphor for the life of an artist. 

This remix makes a great precursor to the release of my next full-length album, Setting Fire To The Stars. (Coming this fall). It's a sci-fi themed record that vibes on the darker side of our feelings. Thoughts of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and social isolation are recurring ideas in both the lyrics and music found on this album. Subjects that many of us are all too familiar with. 

So here's my remix of Rocket Man for you. I hope you catch a new vibe off my interpretation of the original classic.

I’ve had this remix in my back pocket for a while and felt it was finally time to let it out. I’ve always resonated with this song for several reasons. To me, the song represents the precious commodity of freedom. The freedom to be who you want to be, the freedom to do what you want to do, and the freedom to love who you want to love. 
As with all my remixes, I tried to keep this song’s arrangement true to the original while adding that electro soul vibe.

Shuj Roswell is the latest musical creation of Denver's own, Mark A. Cooley. Releasing his debut album on Michal Menert's Super Best Records label in 2015, he carefully curates vinyl samples of 60's and 70's funk and soul as a foundation for his production. Fusing traditional sample based hip-hop techniques with warm analog synthesis and hard hitting beats, he sets the table for a sound within the Electro Soul movement he calls, Funk-tron-a-delic.

When playing out, Shuj Roswell Live takes the musical experience to the next level by bringing live instrumentation into the mix. Mark plays guitar and is accompanied on stage by drummer and good friend, Eric Imbrosciano. Eric comes from a hip-hop, funk, and jazz background originating from his early years gigging in and around the New York music scene. He injects a soulful vibe into the Shuj Roswell live sound from laid back hip-hop grooves to drum & bass breaks. Eric also performs in the jazz-fusion quartet, Space Orphan. You might have run into him as he hosts several open jams around the Denver area

In addition to his drummer Eric, Shuj Roswell Live consists of emcee, J. Shook, who’s recorded vocals on several Shuj Roswell tracks and a rotating who’s who on saxophone, trumpet and trombone. Mark recorded with and sampled his live band in the studio on the EP, Shuttlecock
