"This mix is 90% my own productions and 10% forthcoming Suckerpunch from some other stuff we’ve signed, it was fun checking where the blends would fit and which were in key. Mostly things from me and three or four tunes from the label, showcasing new and unreleased stuff with a few of the old songs I can still play in my sets today and represents the sound I’m playing now, the trancey, proggy, hard house sound; there’s so much energy in it man! I went to this party in Berlin called Fandango, and everyone wasn’t stood around waiting for a drop, everyone was just constantly dancing, the reaction reaches all of the way through with those subtle changes.

I love finding those sounds from the old school stuff, you know, big stabby square waves and weird acid lines that find a way to fit together somehow, simple drums that pop out of the mix – then those hard groove and hip house influences from pulling hip hop vocal samples.

I’d spent so much time with bass music that it was something I’d never even seen before, it fascinated me. I used to think techno and trance was “duff, duff, duff,” very simple, not much changing. But you find those gems, so much groove and intricacies in the drums and the way it winds together. There are gems in every genre but that really opened the door to something else, something I like a lot more.

That’s the thing, you might hate a genre until you hear the masters of a genre, you might hate house until you hear one of Dr Banana or The Ghost’s sets, or you think you hate drum 'n' bass until you hear dBridge – there are gems in everywhere.

For me, this trance sound has the speed of breaks and garage, the four-by-four hypnotic pattern of house and techno, it has the vocal chops from other bits — a mash up of so many things that I love."

New York Pride at the Loyal on Bleecker 2018

Danny Russell is a Berlin based British DJ, who has seen impressive international success through his consistent stream of productions and edits, most notably his 2018 release ‘Watchin Out’, produced with Milan based duo, the Dirty Channels. The record debuted at #1 in the Juno vinyl sales charts across all genres and was selected by Mixmag as ‘Tune of the month’ for July 2018 with support from Dan Shake, DJ Boring, Jeremy Underground and Giles Peterson to name a few.

A DJ since 98’, Danny honed his skills on the Manchester Underground to Berlin appearances and global gigs across Europe, the U.S.A. and Mexico. Recent standout shows seeing him DJ at Kinkin club in Guadalajara, Pygmalion in Dublin, a rooftop party in Havana, Cuba, and the 50th Anniversary of Pride in New York City.

With a number of productions in the pipeline, a residency at Berlin’s Neue Odessa bar alongside a growing schedule of local and international shows on the horizon for 2020, the next phase in Danny’s career looks set to be his most exciting yet!

Danny Russell is a producer who has been popping up on our radar time and time again recently with some impressive collaborations with Ronald Christoph which have seen them land on Midnight Riot and Sprechen. Danny, along with Dirty Channels was also behind the stand out remix of Watchin out for Athens of the North back in 2018 which is still getting heavy DJ plays today. With a brilliant new track out on Paper Disco as part of their Trash The Wax Vol 8 compilation we though it was the perfect time to catch up with Danny and he also put together this ace mix for us. LV Mixtape 179 - Danny Russell [Paper Disco]

British born, and currently Berlin based DJ/producer Danny Russell has been in the game for over two decades - since ‘98.  He was first influenced by the sounds of his uncle, DJ Billy Caldwell, who launched the notorious Manchester underground Epping Walk after hours party, frequented by such music legends as New Order, DJ Sasha, The Happy Mondays, Mike Pickering, and The Stone Roses.  Coming up, Danny honed his skills within the Manchester underground dance music scene, regularly playing at some of the most famous venues such as Sankeys, The Music Box, The Attic and Zumar.  After moving to Berlin, he has continued to develop his sound, and played at some of the notable clubs such as Watergate, Suicide Circus, King Size, Kitkat club and Neue Heimat.  He also has expanded his gigs nationally including regularly playing in the US at clubs in NYC with a recent highlight being playing at the 50th Anniversary of Pride. 

Danny has also has been building his catalog as a producer with a string of successful releases, and a discography full of iconic imprints such as Defected, Paper Recordings, Jolly Jams, Midnight Riot, Berlin Bass Collective, Sprechen & Athens of The North and others. Beyond clubs and festivals, Danny has diversified his gigs by playing for some industry brand parties such as Native Instruments, worked as a sound designer and also worked as a post production engineer on various movies.

British Producer and DJ Danny Russell has a long standing love with the sound we call House.

Graduating from the school of ‚03 and the dance floor of Manchester’s legendary Sankeys Soap. He’s been steeped in dance music culture since those heady days –a digger and disco lover who went on to gain a degree in sound engineering and make his own music with impressive results.
  
With a reputation for creating disco-fried, deep house grooves that hit the sweet spot with dancers and club aficianados alike. Danny lives and works out of Berlin these days. 

Making notable releases for the likes of Defected who signed his 2018 hit ‘Watchin Out’ alongside Dirty Channels, turning it from a vinyl No.1 and Mixmag’s Tune of the Month, into a club monster and Spotify smash with well over 3 million plays. Picked up and played by taste-makers such as Dan Shake, Josh Wink and Giles Peterson and finding him new fans in Spiller, Sam Devine and Kevin Saunderson.

Danny’s ‘Love Rescue’ release on Sprechen was one of Craig Charles (BBC6 Music) best tracks of 2020 and included it in his 100 tunes of all time.

Musically, Danny covers everything from upfront disco edits to jacked-up house grooves and is signed to the likes of  Defected, Paper Recordings, Midnight Riot, Athens of the North and more. His hits have translated into gigs across the world including sets at the 50th Pride Anniversary in New York City, Word of Mouth in Ibiza, underground institution Pygmalion in Dublin and rooftop clubs in Havana, Cuba. And since moving to Berlin in 2012, he’s become a regular headliner at the city’s best clubs including Watergate, Renate, King Size and Neue Heimat.

He currently holds down three new Berlin residencies, and has upcoming international gigs as well. With more releases to come and a habit of creating big tunes that resonate long after they’ve been released, expect to hear a lot more from Danny Russell in the near future.
